Followed the link to the mini show guide and was surprised to find no mention of Blackgates or Warco in the list of specialist traders, seems though that the Miracle Shammy, Woodland Trust and Portsonchan Hotel will be attending.

Hi Baz, not surprised about Blackgates, as they say on their website front page that they will not be attending. Warco have also stopped going to any shows since last year.

Tickets will also be available at the event if you don't purchase in advance. The cash box opens at 9am with the exhibition opening at 10am daily.

A quick check also reveals the absence of the multitude of eBay suppliers. What an opportunity they miss to relate to the hobby and to understand where their products are used, to show clearly the quality and to provide all the technical information for their safe and efficient use. But that costs money which in some circles is considered to be "value for money" or "quality".

Others call it savvy shopping.

I'm sure that the organizers could find small stands in remote dark areas by quick exit doors!

Or look for them outside the tube station. at the bottom of the hill or in the carparks.

Oh well, can't have it all!

PS Look for the exhibition coming to a farmer's field near you. Four people and a car for £1. What a bargain. Rock bottom prices (supplier makes no profit), organizers make no money. Savviness at its finest.

So more time to look at the models then.

Being a rare visitor to London, do any on the ULEZ, LEZ and Congestion Charge rules apply to Ally Pally?

As far as I can tell they don't if you drive a car, but I want to be sure...

Depends on what direction you are coming from, I pass through the zone but the Scooby is exempt but Mitsubishi is not so guess what I will be driving, though won't get out of 2nd gear most of teh time.

If you look at the congestion charge maps they show the area but if coming via M25 from the north you will be OK.

Are you going on Saturday as I may have something for you?

This gives details and allows you to see if your vehicle is exempt

I have been for the last 4 years and always enjoyed the show. But this year I found it very disappointing, a lot of the regular companies and stalls missing and I think fewer engineering clubs. Very quiet compared to last year, I left after about 90 mins.

I wonder what has changed? has the cost of being there gone up (Ally Pally or the exhibition company) that has put companies off?

Real shame as I have always enjoyed this show.... Probably wont go next year.

Hi Mike and others.

I was at the show on Friday. Got there just before 10 and stayed until 4.30.

I always try and make the most of these shows by talking to as many knowledgeable people as possible and i can stand and look at some of those loco's for ages. I also liked the fact that there was something for the youngsters with the Lego table and radio controlled trucks. I will bring my grandson next year as he will be nearly six by then.

I must say that i am very disappointed that the likes of Warco et al were missing. It would even be nice if Arc Euro were there to support us, the people who keep them in business.

I feel that we are all in this together, and this hobby of ours can be expensive.. I am sure that trading space is not cheap but even if they only break even then they really should make the effort and turn up.

If this state of affairs continues then more and more people will stop coming and kill the show completely.

Come on traders, step up to the plate.

It's the same with lots of shows these days. I used to go the the big Land Rover shows 20 years ago. They were full of all the big names in Land Rover spares etc. Now they are not worth paying the entrance fee, Late last year I bought a second hand shot gun. The dealer had just returned from a big show down south. He needed to shift 100 shotguns at the show just to break even.

yes everything is changing....

I have run Triumph classic cars for ~35 years (Herald, Dolly, Stag, TR6 Gt6....etc) been going to classic car shows and over the years the number of parts dealers has gone to almost nothing. Part of it is that a lot of stuff is sold on Ebay and online and its no longer worth the traders going to shows...
I feel the same might be happening with the Model Engineering exhibitions, I hope not....
I have always enjoyed the London show but disappointed by the show. Will try the Doncaster show later this year. For me it more than the show but a chance to meet friends and have a catch up.

Wife is well in to patchwork, daughter is very involved with jewellery making and beading, they both go off to shows at Sandown Park and tell me that it was packed with traders and public. I have taken wife to Malvern showground for patchwork exhibitions and been amazed at the amount of trade stands and people there, all spending money. How come they can do it and model engineering cannot?

Just got back from the London Show, It's a good excuse to meet up with my brother who lives in London and we both thought the show had deteriorated over a few years to a shadow of it's former self.

I have a small CNC mill and was disappointed there was nothing much for the CNC machinists, 3d printing, water jet cutting or laser cutting.

We did have a good look at the Hornby O gauge live steam display though, almost tempted to buy one!

Did I buy anything? Spent about fifty quid on bits and pieces, including left hand drills, taper pins, DCMT tips from JB Cutting tools and a little cheap and nasty vernier (£1) to put in my overall pocket, handy for measuring bolt diameters and anything else that requires rough and ready measurement.

Although the show did have attractions for the younger enthusiast, like a big table of Lego and R2D2 entertaining everyone I think the show needs to get up to speed with modern technology and maybe team up with other 'maker' organisations to put on a bigger joint show, and expand into the two big halls again.

I think you are right (I too recently brought a cheap CNC router to play with) it needs to be change and embrace new technology ie 3D printing, CNC machining etc. There was nothing there for those users.

My wife is a keen knitter and the knitting shows are booming. We went to Wool Week in Shetland and there were people from all round the world coming to a week of woolly stuff. By the end of the week most accommodation was already booked for 2020! All the weeks courses and shows were fully booked months in advance.

The other problem is the age of the visitors, look around they are all a bit old. Its the same in the classic car world the average age if going up and not enough young people coming. The classic car world has other problems including anti car feeling/interest..

BTW I really liked the little display of the welder in the engine shed (Chelmsford eng society?) someone had used a coloured LED to represent arc welding, with the colour changing from white as the arc was struck to red as the job cooled down. Not really engineering but very clever.

One hopeful sign, maybe because of there being less visitors and easier to notice, there were a few women actually looking at tools with interest as if they might buy. But general impression was of old grey men (like me).

Interesting comparison with knitting - its growing popularity does show that people are interested in making things.

My sons fiancé is a magician with a sewing machine but seems to be able to turn her hand to anything.
