In my wooden workshop ,I have 2 lathes 2 milling machines and a shaping machine. I cut out the foot print of all the machines and poured concrete through the wooden floor to the concrete pad below. Very easy to do and you end up with a good solid base for the machines to stand on.

I purchased a Sievert 3525 cyclone burner and it worked a treat. That the boiler seam sealing strip is now complete. Thanks for all the feedback.

Thanks for the replies. I purchased a Sievert 3525 cyclone burner, is rated at 10.3 KW which is more than twice what I'm using at the moment. Fingers crossed.

At the moment I'm in the process of silver soldering my 5" gauge boiler barrel I'm using a Sievert torch and a standard propane cylinder. Even when using a good soldering hearth I'm struggling to get the copper hot enough to produce a good solder flow. Would an Oxy Propane kit overcome this problem ? If so can anybody suggest a suitable kit.

I need to cut two 1inch diameter holes in 1/8th copper sheet. I was thinking of using a step drill up to 22 mm then using a boring head to complete the job. Is there a better way ?

Have been using ebay for ages but rarely sell stuff now. I do not feel inclines to give them my bank details. Looks like it will by buying only in the future.

The boiler barrel on my 5" gauge BR Standard 2 has dimensions of 12" long, 4.5" diameter at the front tube plate and 5" diameter at the throat plate and is a true taper along it's length. As I do not have a set of rollers, would it be practical to purchase a 13" length of 5" OD copper tube and cut it down the centre line then form the taper over a wooden former ?

I have a nice gallon container with a sealable lid what is the best ratio of citric acid to water.

I want to pickle the throat plate of my 5" gauge boiler. If I mix up some citric acid pickle solution, how long does is stay usable once the item has been cleaned. Can I use the solution a week later ?

Mike I had a Saturday morning senior moment and missed out the thickness if the tube plate flange thickness, But thanks for confirming the forming plate dimensions.

Hi All

I intend to make a couple of forming plates to make the front tube plate for my boiler. The OD of the boiler is 41/2" in diameter and the the wall thickness is 2mm Should the diameter of the forming plate be 41/2" minus 4mm ? Or is there an allowance made for fabrication.

Hi Nigel I have made and fitted the drain cocks, The plans omit all of the details of the valves the method of operation the route of any cable, where the operating lever sits within the cab. I have tried bicycle cable in the past but think a solid rod running in a tube is the best method. I will just have to design a route for the tube.

Thanks Nigel, I thought that would be the case, but as I say the plans do not make that area of the loco obvious, just like the total lack of info for the operation of the cylinder drain cocks.

Hi guy's, this might sound a stupid question. At the moment I'm fabricating the brake parts for my Don Young's BR standard 2 loco. I have made the brake cylinder and majority of other parts. As the diagrams are not obvious. Is steam applied to the cylinder to put the brakes on, or does the return spring keep the brakes on, and the steam release the brakes ?

Looking to machine the piston for a steam brake cylinder, The bore 13/16th The groove could be machined to suite a suitable O ring. Does the O ring need to be a snug fit in the machined groove ?

What I find strange is a very simple thing as changing a belt opens up two distinct camps, I have a S7 with probably it's original belt which is on it's last legs. I also have a Boxford ME10 which came with a linked belt both lathes operate fine with no issues. My view is both belts work fine, so why bother to strip the spindle down just to fit a belt.

Hi all, My Myford super 7 drive belt is just about knackered can anybody suggest a suitable replacement, I would rather not split the headstock down to fit an original style belt.

One old wheel one new, Neither will allow a drill to enlarge the central hole which is 0.090" I have ordered some 3/32" En1a rod to make a new press fir spindle.

Michael I think you may be right with the sintered suggestion. Looks like the spindle will have to be a push fit into the central hole in the wheel.

If the wheels are case hardened would they anneal ? They are a dull grey colour so I assume they are not made of silver steel, machined then hardened.
