Gents,

I have wanted a quality European drill for a while and have been searching for Meddings etc. but havent been successful.
i recently ran into this one which seems to be military surplus. Have anyone heard of it? It is a Duss D23 and the press part is a Hahn and Kolb.
My internet searches haven’t revealed much info.

Many thanks,

Mark

The number on the box is a ‘National Stock Number’

Searching for nsn 5130-12-145-6396 will get you to some basic descriptions of the drill and related parts.

Looks a useful bit of kit yes

Edit: The underlining in my post is ‘just another feature’ of the forum software ... I have tried, and failed, to remove it.

Pedant alert: Only in the USA is it called the 'National Stock Number', for everyone else it's the NATO Stock-Number.

The two digit code is the country of registration; USA military items are almost always '00' or '01'. UK registered items are '99'. '12' is Germany.:

What's slightly odd is a German Drill, with a German NATO stock-number, in a German Box, marked 'US Property'! My guess is the drill is of US manufacture, made by contract for the US military with a US NATO stock number, but the same drill has been bought by the German Army and registered by them.

The main purpose of NATO stock numbers is to allow national forces to control their supply systems. NSNs are catalogue numbers allowing military items to be quickly identified, replenished and - absolute top priority - accounted and paid for. Normally the US Army willnot draw on British stores, or even those of the US Navy, but in a shooting war the system allows NATO forces to source equipment and stores from each other, tri-service and/or internationally.

Military gear is usually exceptionally well-made, but beware this may not be a good thing. An old MoD joke is that a TV set made for the armed forces will be waterproof to 20metres, shock-proof and radiation hardened, receive all known TV signals from anywhere in the world, and be made of nothing but the very best materials, all silver-plated. Unfortunately, it will need three highly-trained operators, weigh 500kg, require a 110V 400Hz 3-phase supply, have special plugs and sockets, be £2M per-set over budget and 15 years late. Also, it won't work...

Yes, I know, Dave

It was as a courtesy to the previous owner that I used ‘National’ instead of ‘NATO’

You will of course realise that the suggested search-term ‘nsn’ covers both.

P.S. for this search ... duck duck go returns a better set of results than google

"Military gear is usually exceptionally well-made, but beware this may not be a good thing."

In a former life I worked for a company producing in effect exhaust clamps ( Vee clamps really). Request for quotation came in one day for a clamp to hold the radome top (Fibreglass) onto the base of a mobile tracking system. Spec. noted "Must be capable of withstanding a nuclear blast." We offered some for the customer to test.

Another asked for an exhaust clamp for a system running at a temp of up to 1000deg C.(Yea Yea Yea) Supplied one made from Inconel and received a Monday morning call after a notable Le-Mans weekend saying after a couple of laps car had to have clamps retightened. Company went by the name of TWR, cars were the big cats.

Proved to us SOME people do know what 1000C means.

Regards Ian.

The underlining seems to be because something has identified it as a Skype phone number.
When I click on your link in Opera, it wants to open Skype to make a call.

Thanks for confirming that behaviour, Bill yes

I tried selecting it and using the ‘break hyperlink’ icon in the menu ... but the drop-down list [which defaults to phone number] doesn’t include an option to make it plain text.

Somebody once told me that one merit of the NATO stock number system was that it enabled one to distiguish betweem 'hangars, aircraft' and 'hangers, coat'.

Best regards,

Swarf, Mostly!

It's a nice looking machine, be careful you get the plug wired correctly, the wire colours might be strange.

Good point old mart, I’ll probably in here when the machine arrives.

Indeed it did, Bill ... but I was trying to edit what I had written as a piece of simple plain text, and which had been magically turned into a link by the forum software.

Could you post a pic of the plate on the drill?

Well, it's a hand drill with a separate press, bit like a very, very posh B&D I used to have before I got a bench drill . Unlike the B&D if drills a 23mm hole, it's a very slow drill.

Two useful pages here: **LINK**

https://shop.elektrowerkzeughandel.de/epages/elektrowerkzeughandel.mobile/de_DE/?ObjectPath=/Shops/elektrowerkzeughandel/Categories/DUSS/%22DUSS+Ersatzteile%22/%22DUSS+Bohrhämmer+und+Bohrmaschinen+Ersatzteile%22/%22DUSS+D23-II+u.+D23-II+RL%22

It looks like the same head might be used for multi-spindle drilling machines.

Correction: 6-gang evidently means 6-speed

Yes Michael, thats right. 6 gang indeed means 6 gears. From what I can see the gears are changed using 2 selectors on the body of the drill. Thanks for the links,

Mark

It appears to be the kind of drill that would normally be used on a magnetic base fitted to a bench stand. The magnetic base drills are used by steel erectors etc to drill holes in structural steelwork in-situ.

Looks nice.
