Noise Isolating Platform

Over the years ME and MEW have carried various tips on isolating machinery to reduce noise.

I came across this great concept used by drummers - especially for playing electronic kits indoors on wooden floors, as youc an wear headphones but still need to reduce the floor noise.

With perhaps some simple adaptations it could be a great way to isolate a fairly hefty machine...

I won't make the obvious comment about bit being a load of, but decoupling the source of vibration from the surroundings will reduce transmission greatly over a wide range of frequencies.

A very nice solution, using easily obtainable materials.

Just wonder how many would be needed for a 300Kg machine? i e what is the load bearing capacity of a tennis ball

To be honest, I'd just get anti-vibration mounts from WDS Ltd. The same as I did for the wall mounted speakers, wall mounted transformers and wall mounted dust extractor in the shed...

Might work very well for a compressor housing?

On a smaller scale squash balls can be used to isolate a platform.

I watched this a few days ago and thought the idea was interesting

Forward to around 1minute 45 second mark .

I have 20mm thick or so rubber strips under my milling machine (WM-16) stand and also between the stand and mill. I believe it does reduce noise but I think it introduces bounce when interrupted cuts are taken, similar to flexing of the column.

The rubber was apparently an experimmental one used where my Brother used to work in the 80's, for a test on heavy grinders.

Isolation mounts are available in all sorts of forms, from simple rubber feet or pads to bonded metal and rubber types. Used to use a fair few in machine builds for reducing harmonic vibration in drive motors.
