Boxford AUD needing a new Motor

Replacing the Motor on the Boxford AUD

Hi Folks

My Boxford Aud died this week. I took the motor out this afternoon to get the details for a replacement.

It is currently a three phase using a 0.75HP Brooks Gryphen motor.

Looking at their website it looks as though I can find a nice new replacement at about £75-00 very easily.

Before I picked up the phone I thought I would just ask the question "Should I take this opportunity to convert to a single phase?".

I expect I could find a single phase of the correct power and size to fit BUT....

Does anyone know what wiring problems I would face.

Is it a good idea or am I being stupid.

(It would save plugging the lathe through a phase convertor)

Thanks

Pete

I have a Boxford AUD wired for 1 phase. I'll get some details and pictures tomorrow ( Thursday) and probably send you a PM.

Hi Pete,

I've just moved on from a single phase CUD, if I kept it I was planning 3 phase.

I think you'll find reversible single phase more than the 3 phase motor. Also you won't have the speed control.

The finish is meant to be better with 3 phase as well.!!

Compared with 3-phase, single-phase motors vibrate more, provide less torque, and are unreliable. The only good reason for using a single-phase motor is lack of a 3-phase supply. As you own a phase converter it makes no sense to change to single phase, especially as the lathe would have to be rewired. Spending time and money on a complicated backward step wouldn't appeal to me.

If money is no object you might consider upgrading the phase converter to a VFD . The combination of VFD and 3-phase is hard to beat - speed control and other improvements.

Dave

3 phase every time! wink The ability to control the speed without swapping belts and pulleys alone makes it an easy decision.

3 phase with vfd would be the preferred choice

Thanks for all the replies on this. I am going for a new motor- 3 phasewith 19mm shaft. I think the current pulley on the Gryphon motor is about 2 1/4” for a 5/8” shaft. I guess I need the same size pulley to fit the 19mm shaft. Any suggestions as to a supplier please

thanks

Double check rpm on the original motor.

A/B/C's prolly a common number, but the VSL's ran an unusual 960 rpm motor.

Bore the old one, if there is enough ‘meat’ in the boss? That is what I did for one motor change.

I guess that needs a lathe...

Hi, well I guessing he's got a lathe, but has a bit of a job using it at the moment. I dare say it could be done by using a handle in the spindle bore but would be a bit long winded. Other option is seek out a small jobbing shop locally, maybe wouldn't cost much more than a new pulley if their in a good mood.

Regards Nick.

Indeed I could find a local man to do it but I was hoping someone may know a good source for v belt pulleys to buy off the shelf.

many thanks for all the replies

Pete just do an internet search for "V" belt pulley suppliers, dozens of them about, all selling pulleys off the shelf. Most these days are designed for use with taper lock hubs which you select to suit the motor shaft.

An WM250 has replaced an old Boxford.

Drivetrain is a HuanYang one to three phase 220V ca 50£

Taperlock pulley ca 20£

Powertwist belt ca 20£

1,1kW fourpole three phase motor ca 100 £.

An older Youtube before powertwist.

Thanks for all of the advice. I have now pushed out the old bushes, checked and re-checked all dimensions and have placed an order for a pair of new bushes, a new drive belt and a pulley which should enable me to complete the rebuild of the drive unit. Hopefully it will be quieter and smoother than ever. Fingers crossed.

Thanks again

Peter

If only you had a lathe with a motor you could bore out the pulley to 19mm...
