Rollers and benders

Can anyone recommend a set of plans for either of the two machines as per the title. They would need to be made without any specialist equipment like a lathe or milling machine.

An indication of the size and thickness of material would help as there is quite a difference between rolling a 10mm x 1mm strip and doing the same to a 1000mm wide 10mm thick one, same applies to bending.

Look for yourself on your computer, is my suggestion. There are plenty of metal brake/bender demos on u-toob, along with construction details for more than a few.. Most use available metal sections so one only needs a hacksaw and drilling kit.

Rolls are a different matter, I would think. As above, sizes and precision might depend on whether it was for jewellery (for instance) or 12” to the foot scale models.

Thank you for the replies I did forget to put thickness in my original post but as it was my first I could not edit it to add those.

The maximum thickness I am looking at is 1/8". I have just found a roller in an old Model engineers workshop magazine that I have.

Just out of interest I am a woodworker and these will be used for parts on some of my work. I did own a metalworking lathe but regret having sold it. And would really like to buy another as well as a milling machine but that is something for the future.

For the bender, if you want it for thin metal, look up the David Gingery book on the Camden Miniature Steam Services book (my tablet won't paste links in this forum, sorry). I have a copy and can recommend the design as clear, concise and eminently practical. The only down side is that, as it's American, the sizes are imperial.

Hemingway Tools sell a kit for a set of bending rolls and will sell you just the plans. They seem to be based on the design by George Thomas serialised in M.E. years ago. The rolls were so arranged that the curve went right to the end of the work. I have a set and they work very well.

Are you after rolling and bending wide sheets or narrow strips? If the latter a pair of bars in the vice for bending and a set of scroll formers for curves might be easier.
