Refurbed myfords

Came across a post on the facebook myford user group (post has been removed)

It seems to link to ebay where it seems you can get a new refurbished myford for 3k, now when you go to their website however they all seem to be 5-6k no where near 3k , is this some weird spoof marketing?

Another thing is whats the trend on ebay where a myford vertical slide or a chuck costs 10k , no one is obviously going to buy one

Anyone got as far as enquiring to myford?

The latter is when they are out of stock, saves deleting the ad, they alternate to a price where nobody will buy one.

Noticed that the lathe is described as "New" - perhaps they should read the eBay definition of New.

If you can pedal a lathe at 2000rpm and 3/4-1 hp then my hat's off to you sir.

Seems relatively straightforward marketing if you look a little closer - 3k for the very basic bench lathe and 5k-6k for the all bells and whistles models with stand .

Put simply, Myford Ltd is offering a refurbished machine, rebuilt to a well declared standard and what's more with a warranty.

If you do not want one, let them get on with it.

If you are interested, enquire further.

I see nothing to suggest that this offer is suspect. The lathes are being sold by Myford in it's latest incarnation - spares, support and refurbishment rather than manufacture. The business details - phone numbers, address, etc all match an established business, which can be visited if necessary.

I'd have thought it quite likely that a firm specialising in Myford stuff would earn money by buying up and refurbishing second-hand lathes. As a business they're are better placed than individuals to buy in batches - when a University or similar closes a training facility and puts 10 on the market. They're also well placed to fix random lathes picked up in poor condition - at trade cost they have all the necessary equipment, skills and spares available.

Given that Myford kit attracts premium prices, this is probably a reasonable offer. If the previous owner ruined the bearings with 20 years of grease-gun abuse, Myford will have mended it. Buying direct from the previous owner means you own the risk that the machine might need expensive repairs. The ebay offer appeals to people wanting a Myford who are nervous about buying second-hand.

The prices seem fairly typical. That the number on sale varies doesn't surprise me much. We don't know how fast they're selling or how fast Myford can restock. Possibly Myford have several sat in a repair pipeline with more candidates awaiting inspection in a shed. Plus a man out trying to find more.

Just two comments, if I may, Dave

2. The [non-Connoiseur] lathes advertised on ebay, and on the website are not those ... They are refurbished.

The description of the work done is admirably clear; but I do question the validity of the word 'New' on the ebay listing.

But neither are they "used" in the usual sense of the word. Not when they have had bed and saddle reground, new spindle and headstock bearings etc. "Used" would be straight out of somebody's workshop, with maybe a tidy up and paint, but wear on the bed and bearings etc.

I think anyone seriously considering springing the four grand or so would read the whole posting and understand this was a reconditioned lathe with new bed ways, bearings and spindle etc fitted. They do make it perfectly clear in the body of the posting.

I don't think eBay has a "Remanufactured" or similar option?

Good point Michael - they aren't really 'New', perhaps 'As New' would be a better description if ebay allow it.

Somewhere I picked up the idea that Connoisseurs are assembled from existing stock rather than made from scratch. Can't justify the notion - no evidence.

In pedant mode it's fun to catch you out on 'connoisseur'. As they say 'even Homer nods'. Or are you just checking that the back of the class is still awake!
