![]() 25215 forum posts 3105 photos 1 articles | I deleted my suggestion as his is 6 spoke not 5 but if that will do you his contact details are on his blog I think you are going to have a hard time finding what you are after. 5 spoke flywheels are not that common so that will narrow things down and the other factor is weight as aluminium ones don't work as well as ones made from something heavier Can I ask what it is for? You can also tackle the people who have castings for model engineers such as 'College Engineering' as they may either be able to supply a casting or make you one...... |

![]() 25215 forum posts 3105 photos 1 articles | Well with the recent thread on completing posts I thought I would post this as we all like a happy ending. Although I had removed my suggestion of contacting Myfordboy due to his flywheel being 6 spoke and not 5 spoke he was able to print a pattern for the required pulley and cast one for Linda. Video of it here from screen to finished item.

174 forum posts 1 photos | Daft question time as the first time I have seen a casting video. Why is the flywheel wooden bit in two parts as opposed to being in one piece ? A very interesting video and the casting looks superb - a commentary on what and why he was doing would have helped me understand it more. Thanks. BB |

Why is the flywheel wooden bit in two parts as opposed to being in one piece ? It's a slightly odd way of doing it. Of course you need to mould the drag and cope separately. Often the halves of the pattern are mounted on each side of a board. Then locating pins are used on the drag to pick up holes in the moulding board and cope so everything should be aligned automatically. Andrew |

You can try getting one laser cut there's plenty of jobbing shops with laser cutters around all you need to do is send them a drawing and ask for a quote This is one I had done. And the completed fly wheel Stew |

![]() 25215 forum posts 3105 photos 1 articles | It is possible to do a sand casting with a one piece pattern, lay the pattern in teh bottom of the drag box, pack sand around it in the usual way but when you turn it up the other way you need to carfully carve away the sand down to the half way point. You then dust with talc and ram up the cope as you would with a 2 piece pattern. First casting I ever did was done that way using a Mamod flywheel as the pattern. Gives a perfect finish to both sides. Having the two halves on match boards is the ideal way for production or small batch work buy one offs or short runs it is as quick to do them without a board which is what I have done for the last few I have had cast. Also means the foundry can often squeeze them into the corner of a larger box to keep costs down. Just use pegs and sockets to line up the two halves. You can just about see the pegs/sockets on these.
