Hello All. Just joined the forum. I am Rhodesian living in Georgia. I did a fitter&turner appieship at Zimbabwe Alloys. Moved into the drawing office. I used read Model Engineer at the bookshop. I now work in a hospital(a move I regret).

I have a 9" South Bend in average shape, a mini-mill, a Craftsman drill press and some woodworking tools. Very few people around here share my interests. I found the Model Engineers Workshop and have purchased a few magazines electronicrally.

It is great to see all that you do and to give and receive help.

I have just purchased a new 3-jaw chuck(Christmas present) which needs to be installed. I am hoping to make a small (and simple) steam engine.

I have been looking at an engine on 'steves-workshop.' I think I should manage it. Buying other than 20ft lengths of material is a bit of an issue. It is amazing that no matter how much you have in your 'scrap bin' the piece you need is never there.

Hello Neil. I should have been more precise - Leesburg, Georgia, USA. I thought the South Bend and Craftsman may have given things away.

LOL!

It was "Very few people around here share my interests." that made me think it was the east-European counterpart.

Hello Anthony - don't worry about Neil - when I read "Georgia" my first thought was "that warm place way south of me" then remembered that there were a couple of other Georgias around. Actually, I'd have expected him to think of South Georgia, still owned by the British, I believe.

The 20 foot lengths are a bit of an issue, as sometimes even the cutting charges that I have to pay up here in Canada cost more than the material.

You may also find that lots of items are actually turned all over, so making something out of a bit of larger material may actually happen more than you expect, so you may not require as many sizes as you think.

The Brits are in luck - they can purchase material in small quantities...

John.

Hi Anthony. Surprised that you say "not many people interested in your area."

You are not far from Moultrie GA where I believe they have a huge swap meet for engineering buffs every year. Look up Keith Rucker **LINK** on YouTube you may get more info from him.

regards

I have always thought that meet was limited to cars. I will have to look into it. There is one in Perry GA, dedicated model aeroplanes.

In Ipswich Australia some of the local steel merchants and fab shops are happy for you to browse through their off-cuts bin and retrieve anything useful. Usually charge a nominal fee which goes into their beer fund.

Perhaps the health and safety bureaucrats in your area have made this difficult?
