I am in a similar boat. However being a cunning lad I do have a solution that may work outside the US. As I am not using CAD for commercial purposes I think it is acceptable. My daughter is at university. She signed up for an educational license with Autodesk - 3 years worth.

Interesting thread. here in the US there is one major flaw to the Chinese lathes. We are not given the option of 'true metric.' Only 'sort-of-Imperial.' I called Real - Bull and when I asked if they would bring in a metric version, I got a solid NO. I ended up with an old South Bend.

The anti-Chinese sentiment is high here, but there is not much alternative. I have to assume that the Chinese are improving all the time and that a new Chinese should be more accurate than my 1951 SB!

Post was 9 pounds on one of the English sites. I had not considered AmazonUK. US Amazon has a used edition for over $50!

It is made to run off a vacuum cleaner and is aboout 300mm high.

I will keep looking on the sites you mention.

Hello. Does .................................................................................book? A friend's child wants to 'make something,' and I thought this would be a good project for her. The book is not available in the US and postage from the UK to US is prohibitive.

Alternative project suggestions are welcome.

Do the digital magazines include 'pull-out plans' as advertised on the print editions?

I was board-trained in Zimbabwe. In South Africa I got off the board(full-time) as a designer/estimator. Draughtsmen were well paid and contractors obscenely so. Came to the US - $7/hr. Went on a couple of CAD classes and was told - we hire schoolboys for $10/hr. I thought I was proficient but conned myself into believing I was not and that knowledge of all the software ins and outs was more important than actually being able to draw anything that would work or not break. I worked my way to engineer but CGLI is not known here and Incorporated Engineer equally.

The last time I spoke to a draughtsman he was getting $25/hr(with 20 years experience) and no health insurance. CAD has changed things - I'm not sure if it is for the better. Just as digital cameras have made everyone a professional photographer(I'll fix it in PhotoShop) CAD has made everone a draughtsman!

Well I took a chance and purchased the digital magazine. What a disappointment. 80 of a hundred pages devoted to the IC engine on the cover and a steam loco. The shaper is a 3 page reprint from the 40's.

Pocket mags needs to put the first page of every article in its preview. They had too many pages of the engine build for this issue.

Once bitten twice shy. Unless I see the article I am interested in, I won't be buying.

Problem solved! The book is Methods of machine shop work for apprentices and students... by FA Halsey. Does anyone have any opinions on the book or other recommendations?

A couple of weeks ago someone on the forum mentioned a machinists training book from the early 1900's. I found the book as an ebook from India but I have lost the link and have forgotten the name of the author. Dunderhead!

Best of Model Engineer Vol.3. The cover has a Lynx OHC engine.

The notes say it is 'FT Leightfords'. It said it was built from rolled sections.

I have always thought that meet was limited to cars. I will have to look into it. There is one in Perry GA, dedicated model aeroplanes.
