Jeff Thyer's Myford Gear Hobber

In MEW 258 we will start a short series on a gear hobbing device by Jeff Thyer that fits to a Myford ML7, but in principle it should be adaptable to any similarly sized screwcutting lathe, including mini lathes.

That's interesting. Look forward to seeing the articles. I have a spare ML7 kicking around the shed that I have been wondering what I will do with it when I get it finished up. Hard to justify keeping it as a lathe when I have the Mighty Drummond already. But a dedicated gear hobbbing machine, well I could always use one of them. Hmmm....

It isn't a permanent conversion, you can still use it as a lathe!

I reckon the principle would work on a mini-lathe if you change the gear ratio by 2:1 for the 16 tpi leadscrew.

He's also managed to keep his article fairly short, but there are several pages of drawings that will appear over a few issues.

What month please Neil? October? They will be late here and I'll have trouble tracking MEW down as the local newsagents don't have it anymore.

With respect, you could work out which month it appears from the issue number which Neil did quote.

Hmm, an ML7B, will enable gears varying between 8 teeth (only with modified addendum) up to 504 teeth .

Need to make the powered cross feed as well...

MEW 258 is the September issue, out in early August in the UK. Planned to conclude in issue 259 the 'Autumn Special' (we have 13 a year so one doesn't get a month, so we call it special to stop it feeling left out).
