X Axis power feed on Emco copy using a wiper motor

Just finished the first part on my X Axis power feed for my mill, Next task will be the PWM and finding a suitable power supply, any suggestions?

Nice work!

There have been a couple of threads here on power supplies and speed controls for fine feed. A quick approach is to go to your local Maplin's and buy an MFA speed controller and a suitable 12V supply - look at them online.

What make/model is the vice on the milling table? How do rate it?

Personally I would look at the similar ones that can be used on or off the swivel base to give max headroom when the swivel isn't needed.

If I thought you could collect from B'ham I'd also mention that I have one virtually unused that I want to sell at some point. I think Arc do them too. There are several ways of holding things on some of them.

It's rather nearer than the prototype lashup I did for power cross feed for my Myford S7.

That is still in use as I never did get round to making it permanent, but as a "Temporary" power supply I used a transformer box, with built in rehostat, originally designed for model railway use. I think mine's a Hornby, but its in the other workshop at the moment. To be fair, the motor is smaller than your wiper motor off a car, so I'd suggest measuring the current draw on yours first.

The other thought I had, when it came to developing the design for the Dore-Westbury Mill, was to incorporate a 12v clutch from a car air conditioning compressor.

Thanks, I am also considering doing the same to the Z axis

Z as in vertical or crosswise, either would be interesting as you would still need to retain a manual function, or not.

Now completed the project, here is part 2
