Help please on where to buy a VG S7 top and cross slide.

I agree there's no point in putting rubbish on a refurbished machine. Just a suggestion but why not buy a well worn one and get it reground. Usual suspects.

It's the kind of stuff that if you want it in a hurry, you will have to pay top dollar. But if you wait until the right deal comes up on eBay, Gumtree or somewhere else, you could get a bargain.

Have you tried the Myford lathe group on Yahoo Groups? Someone might have a scrapper you can resurrect.

It sounds a tall order to me. Almost by definition a complete slide will be from a scrapped lathe, and if it was scrapped they are unlikely to be in good condition! It may be better to recondition the slides you have. Unless you have an absolute need to use the topslide for tapers, Hemingway supply a kit for an improved topslide.

The OP doesn't state if he has the top slide etc or if it's missing. If missing some people will set a very high price on that basis.

If the OP has it I suspect the best option would be to talk to Myford about reconditioning it. As this may include new leadscrews and nuts it wont be cheap however the prices they used to charge for bed regrinds and saddle refits were extremely reasonable. I have heard a rumour that the recon facilities are still available but 2nd hand info so not sure. If the lead screws and nuts are ok they might just regrind the slides.

A conventional lathe regrind service is likely to want to take lots of and fit stick on packing strips. They can be persuaded to set up properly and just lightly skim slides but on a cross slide it's worth mentioning how much dish you expect the lathe to turn. If the top needs doing the parts that fit to the guides on the bed are very likely to need doing as well plus the gib strips.

If your offered rusty parts it's pretty easy to clean them up as the machine tool dealer do at times. They work on the basis that the parts will have been oiled at time and use 400 grade emery cloth and lots of paraffin. Curiously to some this doesn't significantly change the size of the parts as cast iron is pretty hard stuff. Flaky rust is best avoided though. Simple surface rust generally isn't a problem.

It's only fair to warn people doing this sort of thing that after the top bits are sorted out the bed will very probably need regrinding and the saddle refitting. Lastly the head stock bearings re scraped in. How do I know ? I've been through this myself. I gave up when it came to the bed regrind and sold the lot to some one very cheaply and told him where to send it.

If the original parts are suitable for reconditioning, I can recommend Lathespares (lathespares.co.uk). They can restore Myford parts at very reasonable cost. I had my cross slide reground and was very pleased with the result. Fast service too. Mike

The problem is that one in good condition is unlikely to be on a lathe that's so messed up it's being sold for parts.

The other problem is that it's the first thing to wear on any lathe and can do so pretty quickly compared with other parts. Gib strips wear too. Those are easy to fix if some one with a surface grinder can be found but sometimes they are bent which isn't so easy to cure. A new one is probably the best option.

May as well mention that on 7's the strips that hold the saddle down wear. One can be turned over. The other has to be reground. Next problem may be that when the saddle is run along the bed it will jam at the tailstock end so it's best to try the turn it over option first and then decide what to do.

There's also an S7 Cross and Top slides for 195 Pounds "buy it now" too, from the seller who advertises somewhat tongue in cheek as "direct from Myford-Stuff." (Myford Stuff being his eBay username.)

You probably won't get much better deal that that for anything of quality. He seems to regularly part out Myfords, presumeably buys good running lathes and parts them out etc. If you want a particularly pristine example you might contact him with your needs and have him keep an eye out.

That tongue and cheek is hilarious! I remember there used to be some words under Myford's listings about being upset about some guys on eBay breaking lathes out for parts.
