I believe the first one is used, with a dial indicator that is not shown, for adjusting the cutting tool in a boring bar. The thumb screw with the ball end is used to push the back of the tool bit while the movement is measured by the indicator mounted in the opposite hole.

Second one could be something to find the centre of a bar before machining ?

No, no, it doesn't have the requisite ostotigilator difrasials to be one of them.

I have something very like the larger coned adaptor in the bottom photo. It's for pouring whisky into my hip flask.

Actually it looks like an over-engineered centring device where you put the whole end of the chuck/spindle into the cone.

Thanks Guys, that seems a good use for the first one.

JS, the small spring on the second one does not allow any marking access to the centre of the main vee so cannot see how it could be used like that but I bow to your expertise, so much greater than mine for sure.

Any other thoughts?

Neil, do you mean for cross drilling a bar or similar?

Can anyone tell what kind of steel has been used?

The second item is for centring in the mill. There was an article in MEW some years ago, might have been by Peter Rawlinson but really can't remember.

I see you have one of those new rulers, that redefines the inch. You'll be out by nearly 5mm using that to convert 12 inches.smiley

Yes, definitely not kosher to call an inch 25mm, even if you're at 2 inches you're closer to 51 than you are to 50. It was hardly worth bothering with the lettering.
