Would I be able to sell this working model that my Father made? If so what should I ask for it?

Thank you for responding Ian. With a little help have added photos, sorry not correct aspect!

The basic dimensions of this modle are: 17" high, 10.5" wide, wheel 9" diameter. Is this a quarter scale?

Amanda.

Its always a bit hard to put a price on an engine as most of us like to build the engine but there are collectors about too. The Camden one is a good size and this one looks to be well made, you could be looking at £1500 plus

Yes 3" to the foot is 1/4 scale

OK, thanks Jason, that's interesting, and promising!!

I'm certain that it is well made, my Dad was quite a perfectionist!

Hello, I need some advice. I have started to build a small stirling engine and it requires a 16mm glass test tube, I have several but they are too long so the question is how do I shorten them, they are 'Pyrex' glass which is heat resistant. I have thought about a piece of string soaked in meths and lit then plunged into cold water, would this work? Thanks in advance, Pat

Pat,

I've cut test tubes for a stirling engine by carefully mounting in the lathe chuck and cutting with a diamond disk in a Dremel. Run the lathe slowly and apply the disk to the cut mark and it will go through fairly quickly leaving a decent edge.

I have a Stirling Engine friend in Belgium who, with his school class builds Stirling Engines each year (he's a school teacher), his method is to(gently) grip the tube in the lathe chuck, and use a Dremel with a diamond cut off wheel, run the lathe slowly, and drip water on the area being cut.

The last time I cut a test tube, I made a wooden V block to rotate the tube on, and scored the tube with a glasiers diamond glass cutter.

That model is one of the 'Rider Erikson' type of Stirling engine. Came as a real shock to me that the 'Erikson' was the same Erikson who designed the 'Monitor' used in the US Civil war and had a loco in the Rainhill loco trials. Quite a stunningly versatile engineer.

Regards,

Richard.
