img50.jpgHi.

I've just bought a tailstock lever feed attachement for my ML7R from the ads here, ( thanks Nick)

It did not include the barrel or the threaded cap which screws into the right hand side of the tailstock. I plan to make these parts (after all I have a lathesmiley )

Question is:-

(1) does any one know what the internal thread in the right hand side of the tailstock is?

(2) Can any one with this attachement measure these two parts?

I've incuded a photo (taken from lathes.co.uk) which clearly shows the two parts I hope to make.

ie. the barrel and threaded cap.

Thanks in advance.

Ian

Think I might have a spare barrel and nut kicking about, check tomorrow as it's twenty past dark now and the workshop is haunted.

Anyone else think their old mill is haunted?

John.

That would be great if you have.

Place and press a piece of blue tack inside the barrel onto the treads, carefully remove and measure the threads, I have done this several times.

Congratulations on getting this excellent accessory; I can certainly measure mine if needed and look forward to you sharing your impressions of it in due course.

I have made one or two small improvements to the design and will look out a photo.

ega.

If you could go to the trouble of making a simple sketch with some dimensions on, this would be greatly appreciated.

Another question, In the photo I posted what purpose do the cap head screws on the RHS of the casting serve.

As you can see, I have replaced the pivots which were worn; two are custom-made phos bronze bolts and the third is a modified shoulder screw. The clamp has been provided with a ball handle and the cap screws retaining the collar have been replaced with CSK screws to give a little more travel. Also visible is the knurled end of the draw bar which the lever feed makes possible.

I have fitted a slightly longer lever with a more comfortable handle. Because the device makes the tailstock "tail heavy" the new lever is taper drilled at the handle end to improve balance. Finally, the other end has been fitted with a brass nose so that the lever can be used as a drift to knock out tooling (see first photo).

Does my last post, which crossed with yours, answer your question?

I'll be delighted to do a sketch and suggest you PM me with your email address for this purpose, always assuming the offer from John Stevenson does not make this unnecessary.

p1201449.jpgThought I would post a couple of photo's showing the lever feed tailstock attachement now fitted to my ML7R.

Thanks to Nick for selling it, John for providing the missing parts ( I had to mill the key way approx. 1" longer to get the full travel) & ega for the photo's and the offer of assistance.( I wil make a draw bar as you have)

Ian,

It's really good to see that the attachment went to a good home! My Dad would be most impressed with the installation on your machine.

Hope it serves you well in the years to come.

Nick.

Thanks for the photos. That's a good-looking ball handle! As you know, I prefer a more hand-friendly handle on the lever itself.

I've been using one of these attachments for a few years. Had planned to install some sort of DRO, as many of you have, but found that I could set the travel stop within half a hundredth (inch) using a steel rule. That means I can watch the drilling process, not the readout, and let the stop worry about the end of the process. What a pleasure!

Hi Ian J

Back in 2016 You corresponded with John Stephenson regarding a long tailstock barrel for your Myford Super 7 and it appears that you bought the long barrel, complete with nut.

I am thinking of converting my Super 7 tailstock to lever feed, making the entire mechanism from scratch. I shall probably start by making a long barrel for my lathe, but I am concerned about drilling / boring such a long hole down it. If convenient, could you please measure your barrel and tell me how long it is so that I can plan how to make this part. I see that the cap has a brass/bronze plate on it and presumably this forms a bush for the tailstock barrel to slide through.I have the normal barrel on my machine and should have no problem in creating a new cap with a bronze bush in it.

I hope that you will be able to advise me.

David H

I to have this attachment with the barrel and cap/nut missing, so add my name to those who need help please. Hopper may have drawings or I can help with dimensions all the other parts.  Noel.
