Free Plan: A Fretsaw and Filing Machine

Free Plan: A Fretsaw and Filing Machine

Another design from Mt G. Gray. Following on from his lathe-mounted bandsaw this is a neat design for a filing machine that can also used with fretsaw blades. It first appeared in issue 12 of Model Engineers' Workshop, August/September 1992 - more details can be found by looking up this issue in the online archive*.

It's HERE.

I'm utterly paranoid about the lack of a guard in this design, it really needs one, as you will see!

But as a special; treat, the picture is now in 'romantic sepia'.

Next month... Jeclanide!

This is fixed now. I'm not sure what happened, I had to re-upload the file.

No,. I was pm'd with a request by someone else, and I know at least one other chap has downloaded it, so some folk are interested.

The article has got 440 views already, not bad for the first 24 hours.

In fact, one forum member has made the Stan Bray filing machine from the plan and has a photo in his albums.

Very droll, Neil

Most people use needle files' but they are cut the wrong way so they work on push not pull.

So HERE you are Ronan

For round files, chain saw files would be ideal, and easily mounted in reverse so that they pull down to cut. sizes from about 1/8" / 3 mm up.

If anyone is not happy with files cutting on the upstroke then the method I adopted for modifying standard files, for use on my filing machine, could easily be used for modifying needle files.

Details are here on my website, modified files

The tang end of a file is generally soft enough to cut off with a hacksaw.

Thanks Ian, I had not thought of that, will give it a try should I want to produce any more files for my machine.

That's OK Harold, just as quick/quicker with the angle grinder, and you can make fancy shapes too. I'v only modified files to make wood turning tools.
