Well done on your first IC engine Nick, sounds good and I'm sure you will soon have the teething problems sorted out which will only make it better still.

Cheers Jason,

Turned out to be an easy fix. On taking the heads off to find the cause of the lack of compression on one cylinder it seems that one of the O rings that sealed the inlet manifold to the head must have not been inserted properly on assembly.

Got half sucked in and was keeping the valve open a tiny bit.

Thanks Gary,

First I need to finish off this one with the tank mounting and cable tidying etc while it's still on the bench or it will never get done and properly finished. Engine is also running much better now.

As for 'what next' ........... I don't really know. thinking So any suggestions anyone.??

Hi, I too am building the Hoglet. I am using my Arduino based dividing head to cut the gears, and next will be the cams.

I wondered if anyone had a spreadsheet of details for milling the cams. The drawings have limited information and I don’t know how best to proceed.

Regards, Mike

Well you could forget the Arduino and do it as per the build article. All the info is on the drawing for milling them that way.

Something like Cam-Calc would generate cuts at 1 degree spacing though I'm not sure if that does radius flanks or just flat ones. Even with that and your dividing head you are looking at making several hundred very small height adjustments to the mill so much longer than the boring head method

Issues 10 & 11 of Model Engine Builder mag, you can buy digital back issues. It's a bit of an odd arrangement to order them but just go to subscribe and you will get to the back issue order page after a couple of clicks

Thanks Jason. maybe a single cylinder engine would be good to do first.

Thanks for your reply Jason.

I have reread Randall Cox build notes and have tried drawing an enlarged cam on graph paper. With my limited knowledge, I think I will buy Model Engine Builder no.7 which shows making the cam for his Open6 engine.

Regards Mike.

Nick,

That's very nice and it sounds great.

Mike,

I'm happy to have a go at putting the data you have into my camcalc spreadsheet. PM me if interested.

Cheers both,

Rod
