Bazyle, realise the dark months will give very little output but would only be a concern if I was intending to go totally off grid, would love to be able to do that but definitely not feasible in UK with our climate.

I need to investigate what current costs would be for solar PV

A chap I chatted to felt the best winter system in Jockland was those vacuum tubes which do the heating part of your requirements

As my workshop is in the garage that also stores the freezer and other domestic items it has it's own built in cooling system.

Unfortunately it is off at the moment as I can't find the bottle opener.

Neil, most fish don’t like being frozen. Depth of pond at a foot is a bit shallow for a hard winter survival, I know I live in the tropical south east, (East Sussex), but my Koi pond has never suffered any ice in winter, my goldfish pond at three feet deep has frozen over, particularly this last winter. The Koi pond holds such a large volume of water, 3,000 gallons, and is continually absorbing ground heat so stays ice free. I feel for your fish if you get any more!

We inherited the pond, but it's gone now.

It's sad when pets need to be rescued from some unspeakable fate I have two in my pond that have been blessed with an extra 4 years.

Nick I am surprised a model engineer has been stumped by a bottle opener wink

Beavered away this morning till about 1pm, opened the door and a gush of warm air hit me.

Its always at least 5 degrees colder in my man cave all year round.
Winter can have a large 2kw oil filled heater and a Calor gas on 1bar for 3hrs. Open the door and have a warm by 11am.
