![]() 36 forum posts 4 photos | hi again . some questions and thoughts on the diamond tool holder. if i wanted to grind the tool with a bit more clearence on the cutting angles what angle would you alter on the grinding jig supplied. would increasing the angle of the ramped slot have this effect.
the other point i was wondering about concerns the limited approach to the chuck when threading because of the angle the holder has to be set at. if the threading tool was ground on a round tool bit it could be rotated slightly in the holder. would this help or am i missing something. anyone any thoughts.

Hi Andy,
I have not had a close look at a "professionally" made tool holder, other than on You-tube so unfortunately I cannot say if they give you enough clearence but HSS is cheap enough to play around with and see what differences make
You are perfectly correct about the "near chuck experience" and if you come to Sandown MEX in December, have a look on the SMEE stand and all being well I shall have a few variations on the theme, including a dedicated screw cutting holder. I should be there to explain how you can make one, depending on what equipment you have.

![]() 165 forum posts | hI I have made mine now, and I must say that it works very well. I have a little chester lathe ansd I can take a 2mm cut on steel bar without problems.
Because the forces are downwards, there is virtually no chatter, and the finish is good.
Only one error in the making of the sharpening jig, I made it the wrong way round!!!!
Oh well, nobody's perfect.

I hate say I told you so, but..............etc etc and welcome to the converted, your mission now is to spread the word.
![]() Marvelous idea isn't it, I really cannot see why it is not more well known, yes I can, in industry carbide came along. Oh well, at least we hobbyists can still use them to good effect.
I made a holder the other day to take 6mm Sq. carbide tool, not too succesful I am afraid.
I think the tool needs to a be a good bit steeper to give the carbide more support.

82 forum posts | Bought a Diamond tollholder in 1994 before I left Oz. I cuts like magic on my 918 type lathe. I later noticed a very similar device with screwed height adjustment in a Percival Marshall book of my Dad's dating from the 1930's. Used round HSS and showed how negative rake could be used on Brass etc. There is nothing new under the sun eh! I had never thought of using round HSS in the Diamond however so I will give it a try. Will make finishing cuts much easier.

I have just looked at the number of views on various subjects and I note that this subject has the highest number, beating most by a factor of ten or so. I think, therefore, it is time you published your construction article and gave even more publicity to these "wonders of engineering"

The article went to the printers at 5:21 last night.
It is in Model Engineers' Workshop issue no 156 due out in a fortnight.
It has complete drawings for a 10mm sqaure shank version but could easily be squared up.
Subscribers will probably be able to access the article on this website early next week.
The rest of you will have to be patient.

141 forum posts 32 photos | Well I've just tried it and I am impressed! It does exactly what it says on the tin.
Even on an old unknown piece of mild steel I swivelled the toolholder around so there was very little clearance, almost rubbing, and at 300rpm produced powder like swarf and an almost mirror finish.
Worth it I reckon.

I had no doubt that you would be pleased with your purchase, as I have said before it is now your mission to spread the word.
![]() Hi Keithmart,
If you mean a dedicated thread cutting toolholder, can you hold out till MEX at Sandown, if so come and see one on the SMEE stand. I will try to explain how to make one with just basic Milling equipment. If circumstances should prevent me going, I shall try to deputize to another advocate.

Any chance you could email details??

1049 forum posts 1 photos | Hi Keith,
I have not drawn up the holder (yet?). I just made it up as I went alomg. Drawings may not indeed make making it any easier. A few photos and paragraphs plus a bit of nouse (?) would set you on the way. Will see if I can find the time to make another and take some photos, but don't hold your breath, I was pacing myself for December.

1049 forum posts 1 photos | Hi Keith,
Just had a thought, did you mean the jig for sharpening the tool bit for screwcutting or did you mean the holder for actually doing the thread cutting,
If it is the former, somewhere on the net there are plans drawn by, I think, Rick Kruger .
I have them in "My documents" saved for future reference. If they would be of help I can look for them or at least try to find the link so you can get them direct.
If I can find them I shall not put them here without the copyright holders permission, so the link would probably be better.
