Off hand ground carbide drill for drilling 62 Rc and hard stainless.(1st and 2nd stages of grinding shown)

Showing hole drilled today, and a simple part off blade holder made some time ago.

Run at 2500 -3000 rpm and push hard, be brave, you can trust me I'm an engineer!

I was given some brown gloop by one of the club members. It was magic, 270 holes later, no breakages and only one drill bit for each of the hole sizes

It was Rocol RTD

.

It's super stuff ... I've never found anything better.

Ah... Rocol RTD. The stuffs brilliant but you almost need a second mortgage to buy a small bottle! Still what price on something that works well?

John,

I'm still using the "toothpaste tube" of RTD that I bought several years ago; but [concerned by your post] I checked the very variable pricing.

This looks a bargain.

Hi Michael and all. Perhaps that was a bit unfair re. pricing. A tin or tube goes a long way and it does do what it says on the tin! I did buy some of the Cleancut in 350mg plastic bottle a while back - that was a case of how much? But again you pays your money and takes your choice.

From the link I see they sell Micrometer Engineers Marking Blue - now who was asking about that the other day on the forum?

I served my time in a company that made waste water and sewerage treatment machinery which were nearly all made of 300 series austenitic stainless steel. We had to drill and tap a huge amount of holes in the chassis for the various components etc, we went through vast amounts of drill bits and taps, all good quality presto stuff. To try and reduce the amount of broken tools and blunted drills etc we tried every type, description and brand of metal cutting oil made. We settled for trefolex, the horrible smelling green goo in the old fashioned looking yellow can. I still have a few tubs in the shed and swear by it.

I am also a fan of Trefolex, used it on conduit threads when I was an apprentice, thought it smelt better than tallow which was also popular. I have used it ever since for tapping, also on a hacksaw blade but can be messy.

Pete,

It took me a while to get your drift

... The price oddity you are quoting is from the Amazon link that Gary posted.

... Just Amazon having a funny turn I think.

Michael

I can see why. A few typos in my post. That's what you get for quickly posting messages while eating your cornflakes prior to leaving the house in the morning.

No problem, Pete

Thanks for highlighting the Amazon strangeness.

....

As a follw-up question, for anyone with relevant experience; I see that the product in the new-style tins is described by Rocol as "Chlorine-Free" ... Is this (a) Good, or (b) Euro/Eco interference ?

... Should we all rush out and look for old stock [i.e. "the proper stuff"] question

MichaelG.

Note: According to this brochure [page 5 of the PDF] the performance is the same.

Interesting that they do a layout spray that does not flake.

Apart from doing a great job but a bit messy with it (easily cleaned up) I was told that if you drive RTD hard to the point it smokes it gives off a sulphur fumes which can cause rusting of equipment. So really a case of clean up well after the job is done.

BTW my buffer beams have 1/2" holes for the buffer stocks. Most of my larger drills have been sharpened with 4 facets. I went through in 1mm steps and they thought nothing of the stainless. The one newish drill bit that hadn't been re-sharpened struggled when it was its turn. Maybe something for some of you to try?

Yes that's true, but 'rusting' is maybe a too strong word. The effect is more like that of the well-known blackening solutions, although the colour is more dark brown than black.

You can see this effect on a Morse taper holder for my Fehlmann Mill-drill, the exposed front part has got an even colour all around.

kind regards, HansR.
