Windoze updates has not wiped out my "Remember me" information.

Deleting the Cookies in IE will though!

OK,

If I turn off cookies and log out my screen looks like John's screen dump ie no remember me button and the two paras of Welcome to ME above Ben's picture.

If I turn on Cookies the remember me box reappears.

When I log in the welcome to ME paragraphs vanish and Ben's picture is level with the login box.

Simples cheeky

Browser probably irrelevant but ie8 on XP

Not staying logged in seems to have started with the cookie policy requirements. I can't find how to stay logged in, there seems not to be an option except to log on each time I visit the site.

I do not have this problem with any other sites I belong to so think it must be unique to the Model Engineer site.

Not staying logged in seems to have started with the cookie policy requirements.

Of course it did .... you need the cookie to stay logged in. Before the cookie policy the website simply set the cookie (as long as you checked "remember me" without asking.

When the cookie policy came along the same thing happened if you agreed (one time) to accept cookies. Otherwise you don't get the cookie (or, incidentally, the check-box) and you don't stay logged in.

Other sites (particularly non-UK sites) don't specifically ask whether you will allow cookies. They assume that if you don't want cookies you either have them turned off in the browser (which is the normal thing to do if you feel strongly about them) or by checking the "remember me" / "stay logged-in" box you, ipso-facto, accept the implied cookie.

I wonder how the website remembers whther you have accepted cookies or not. It doesn't seem to be in my profile or other user information.

Maybe they do it by setting a cookie? smile o

Right then, does this cookie setting system mean that I cannot have a choice now wether or not to accept cookies? If it is possible to make this decision I do not know how it is done.indecision

That seems to be the question. Whether the web maintenance people have made provision to re-visit the question of accepting cookies for those that change their minds (or hit the wrong button initially).

Logically, it should be a configuration option stored (and editable) in the user's 'my details', 'my profile' or (probably) 'my account' but I can't see it in any of those places.

David?

I believe it goes something like this ...

When you "Accept Cookies", the system installs a range of cookies on your machine. [*] ... One of these is a flag that tells the server that you have accepted.

According to the setting of that flag; you will see either; (a) the "keep me logged-in" checkbox, or (b) the banner inviting you to accept cookies.

[Curiously though; I have noticed that some subsidiary pages continue to show the banner.]

To "change your mind" the safest thing would be to remove all cookies from the machine.

MichaelG.

[*] The range of cookies could be quite wide, but will mostly be to do with tracking behaviour ... for the benefit of [and the billing of] the "sponsoring" Advertisers.

Hi, cookies have been used for ages, the only real difference is now web sites have to warn you that they are using them and give you the option to accept or reject. If you accept and then change your mind, then you will have to go to the privacy policy and alter your settings, you can do this as a blanket ban on all sites or on listed sites. If you scroll down to the bottom of the page you will find a line of tabs, two of which are Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy. Click on the Cookie Policy to find instructions for the browser that you are using. You will find that if you block all cookies, you will probably not be able to sign in at all.

Regards Nick.

P.S. good anti-virus software will remove tracking and undesirable cookies, normally in a background mode.

Hi, you may need to restart your computer after accepting the cookie policy before the remember me box shows. I'm using IE9 and it didn't show up untill I restarted mine.

Regards Nick.

Hi

Re accepted cookies, logged in and out, restarted, still no remember me box.

No real hardship I suppose.

Ian,

That's strange ... have you checked your settings in Safari ?

MichaelG.

P.S. There is a pretty good description of cookie management on Misco's website

You might try clearing the" cache" in your browser - usually a command on one of the drop down menus. That makes the browser download the latest version of the page you're looking at rather than keep using some out of date coding. Depending on the settings on your machine re-booting or re-loading the browser may or may not clear the cache automatically, it doesn't on mine,( Windows 7 and Firefox)
