"Dinnae fash yersel" My southern English mother was bemused to be told to "Dinnae fash yerself hinny" on one of her first visits to the prospective parents in law based in the far north east of England, some 20 miles from the border and had to ask Dad for a translation. |

![]() 1602 forum posts | Thanks guys, I couldn't find much online, but if's in the OED with a description that matches what I was talking about, then as far as I'm concerned "Fash" is a valid term to use for a rough edge. And "Flash" is reserved for excess material outside a mould or die. So the first teacher (and my Dad) were right, the second teacher was wrong. Sorted! |

2805 forum posts 219 photos | As I said, the "rough edge" meaning is old. OED gives various examples of its use accessed free, in my case, via my membership of the local library - worth a look if you can do the same or have your own subscription. |

865 forum posts 12 photos | My OED is the cd-rom version which I received as a gift many moons ago (most of the files are dated 2009). Handy to have with a shortcut on my desktop. Not sure if they still do the cd-rom version. There is a website which purports to sell it but the ordering links go nowhere so it may be the remnants of an old site. |

... I've only ever heard "fash" being used by a worried Scots person. Rod Me too. I spent nearly 40 years in various contacts with engineering personnel from Cornwall to Dundee and never heard the word in any other context. |
