Thanks for that John, I checked back at the Arc website and the price had gone up since I checked last night to £80 for the 70mm version, so I bought one of each size from MSC for £89, never used them before, the website is a bit weird to navigate, but couldn't turn down an extra vice for a tiny bit extra while on offer.

The only MSC I could find was in Dollars or have I got the wrong company is there a link you could post or even message me with. Many thanks

"Has anyone worked out how to order these at the stated price on line as I
could do with a 3"? I've signed up and applied the special
discount code but it still states £93 odd!"

Hi Henry,
The September Advantage flyer has just dropped through
the letterbox and both of these vises are still on offer.
If you bring up the advantage page in the Special offers box and click on the code
for the vice on page 14
It will show for 3" list price £121.55 Web price £41.99 stock 83
and for 2" list price £98.69 Web price £31.99 stock 57

I usually place the order by phone on 0800 66 33 55
if you have no luck online give them a call at least you will
know what they are charging for this item. They are plus vat
and possibly a delivery charge about £4.00

That's probably the US site Google MSC J&L and you will find the MSC site.

Grrr.... I've just had to let the moths out of my wallet because of this thread !

I had no problems ordering from the Advantage flyer - note that using the promo code ADVFREE gets free carriage.

3" vice cost £50.39 inc. Vat and free delivery. You do have to create an account to be able to check out & the account allows you to set a different delivery address to the invoice address - my vice is going to work. Got an order acknowledgement seconds after sending the order.

I used to buy quite a few items from the Advantage flyer when the company was J & L Industrial Supply, but they never seemd to be as competitive after MSC took them over. Used to worthwhile calling in to their Wednesbury HQ when I was passing for the "clearance " corner - the free coffee & doughnuts was something of a draw as well !

Thanks for your help John, order placed! I'll keep an eye on their flyers if they are doing such good deals...

The vise arrived first thing this morning from MSC and was very well packed. On unpacking I was very impressed by the finish and apparent quality, having clocked it on the mill I can't find fault with a .0005 clock.

A great buy at the price, I just need to make a couple of small clamps for it now...

While on the subject of the ARC type 2 vice, does anyone know why the moveable jaw on my 70mm version is 0.030mm narrower than the fixed jaw, because ARC don't seem to know, and according to ARC, they are all the same.

I assumed it was to prevent the moveable jaw from binding if the vice is used on it's side, but apparently not.

I was asked, why would I use the vice on it's side? To clamp a longish workpiece vertically, where, in the normal position, the jaw depth is too shallow. Or, make use of the longer vee groove in the vertical position.

It doesn't affect the function of the vice, I was just curious.

I believe it is so you can hold the vice in another vice and still be able to operate the moving jaw. Sometimes a very useful trick! Or, as you suggest, still be able to use the vice on its side or pushed up against something like an angle plate or 123 block.

I bought one of these at the price in the flyer. The toggle thing is a little wobbly but I'm shocked at its precision. I've been running over it with a micron DI and a surface plate and every feature seems to be less the 5um. Many are less than 2um and that seems to include the 'chatter'. Really good. Thanks for the heads up.
