Just for the sake of full disclosure, does this mean there are now 4 (5?) moderators who have access to our personal data by logging on as any one of us?

At the moment the new moderators don't have access to that part of the system, in the same way that I did not when first press ganged. Even then existing mods don't need to log in as you to see data such as e-mail and address, logging in as you would only allow access to PMs which is something I very much try to avoid doing.

Also worth noting that a lot of members don't enter much info, it is only those with a subscription where we can get a full address etc. by looking up their subs details.

The basic moderator role does not have the powers of site administrator so no need to worry about data access. Moderation of posted content is our concern so we only see what has been shared with the world already and can edit inappropriate content or correct formatting errors. I hope that addresses your concerns.

Mike

While I was thinking, Jason explained.

Nothing to add from me but to offer our two new mods my best wishes for a long and happy future in their new roles. We may well miss their daytime postings on the forum if they get loaded with the ‘graveyard shifts’ for a while🙂 .

I’m not sure how the forum has coped with just 2 active mods, what with all the hackers, trolls and such-like around these days - keeping a close eye on the forum must be quite time consuming, even if they have software assistance (and much faster computers than I have!).

Thanks to both of you for stepping up to the lofty heights of moderator!

Hopefully we will all behave ourselves...

By the way who moderates the moderators?......!

Regards to all

Derek

The Administrator (which is me).

Just to add, moderators (including me) can't access any financial information like bank accounts etc.

Jason and I can check if subs are up to date or addresses are correct, that sort of thing.

Excellent recruitment in my opinion. What's not to like ?
A regenerated “ModeratelyOldDuffer” combined with a “Poole of Knowledge”.

I see no problem with the “Who moderates a Moderator” question.
Readers are fully familiar with our old acquaintance (and nuisance) the Backlash.
A powerful weapon in the hands of the Forum cognoscenti.

Dave and Mike. Welcome and enjoy.
Maybe keep a tin hat nearby just in case?

Chris.

What that I only do it in very few cases, do you think we (mods) should be looking at PMs more?

No, the fact that you do it at all. I've been operating under the illusion that private messages were just that, private.

Rest assured I won't be inspecting PMs! The only circumstance where I might read a PM is if a member complained about being sent inappropriate content. Even then I might not actually read it because that sort of issue is in my 'refer to Neil' category.

That is why I said I try to avoid it. I think the last time I did was a few years ago when we had a new young female (assumed so) member who started PMing several members and this was reported to us so I felt was a appropriate reason to do it. From what was in the PMs it confirmed what we felt about them and they were promptly deleted.

I mentioned it as the question of access to personal details was raised, I certainly have PMs with my e-mail address in and have been sent other members e-mail addresses by the same method so they do contain details and it is possible though unlikely that they could be viewed by a moderator..

That's interesting, a thread I started last night seems to have disappeared. I'm not that bothered as it had answered the question I had and I wasn't expecting any replies. Which was what happens in a post if one uses a picture from an album and then deletes that picture from the album. But having had a post edited recently it would have been courteous to have had confirmation that the post had been deleted.

I deleted the whole thread which took the deleted post with it so could not put a comment or post in it.

We do have a TEST THREAD for just that sort of thing.

Same thread went on my to-do list yesterday because it looked like a dead-end single post experiment of no interest to other members. I intended to delete the thread today unless value was added overnight but Jason got in first!

Nothing wrong with the thread other than zero content being an unnecessary distraction.

Would have been my first major moderation, So far my reign of terror consists of deleting one empty post and rotating a photo!

Spelling is not a concern, it is usually considered impolite to criticise spelling on forums as there are many people who struggle with spelling and to point it out could be off putting to people who still have interesting things to say or questions to ask.

Luckily good spelling and a grasp of the English language is not a requirement to becoming a moderator as I would never have got a look in!

Most members seem to be able to follow what I'm on about which is the main thing that matters to me and as Mike says I would not want someone who has difficulty being put off posting because of it..

Not often, more likely to put a comment on the thread eg "link removed against CoC"
