Thread: Load reactors for VFDs
17/10/2021 11:47:56

Andrew T.

Not a direct answer but a reminder of your previous post. Title :- Earth Leakage on a 3 phase Motor : post date 31/12/2020. Includes my experience with a 3 phase sine filter supplied with my VFD
It drives a Pultra Mardrive motor circa late 1940's / early 1950's and set with 7 second slow start.

All is still working well (fingers now firmly crossed).
Not a direct answer but it might help your thinking.

Thread: Earth Leakage on a 3 phase Motor
03/01/2021 19:14:56

Hello again Andrew Tinsley.

dscn0798.jpg

Initial test set up. The black box is 180H x 120W x 65D (Maplin). Has tapered sides so the unit is sat on a Vero board with two tapered bits of wood under. The cables pass through holes in the front cover.
Slide out of the box if required.

The inverter shows the underside with the output cable not connected (T1 T2 T3 on the right).
Now mounted vertically to show screen and the set up buttons to the front.
The Filter notes just say : Sine Wave Filter. Input on U1 V1 W1 Output on U2 V2 W2.
The invoice includes Sine wave Filter 3 Amp. All bought in 2015 and "just works".

Not shown is the connected Control Pendant and the 3 phase socket. Accepts either the lathe or the drill.
I admit that all else is a bit above my pay grade. Hope this is of some assistance.

Equivalent problem. I had acquired a Pultra 1590 lathe and a Meddings Pacera drill. Both circa 1950. Both had damaged / missing parts. Both being sent for scrap. Motors are the original 3 Phase units and had not run for at least 40 years. The Pultra has the Mardrive unit and the Meddings a Brook motor. Taking advice I had both motors tested then bought a Drives Direct unit with a Sine Wave Filter (transformer). Avoiding winding insulation failure was given as the reason for the filter. Wanting to stay as original as possible my wallet suffered larger damage than I had hoped. Both motors run well after nearly 6 years: but a heart attack and advancing years has left me with limited progress.

Thread: A Certain Age

Howard. There is always the teenage version : if we can remember !

"If you're not here after what I am here after then you'll be here after I've gone !"

But what on earth was it that I was after ?

Thread: Plans for updating the archaic forum?
10/11/2020 23:18:22

Sorry Lee : but I am with the above majority, I too prefer the simplicity.
So for me "It ain't broke so don't fix it".   Agree with Georgineer on the "constant flickering".
I dangle a sheet of thick paper from the top of the screen to blank out the annoyance.
Plus : given all that I don't know, or have forgotten, I gain so much from reading the variety of posts.

Congratulations Arthur and add a +1 for Rik Shaw's comment.

Extracted from Neil's post announcing the : 2020 Stevenson Trophy Competition.
“works well” and “reticence about traditional competitions.”

A first attempt posted in the Miscellaneous Models section of the Forum deserves full encouragement.
I know it's not a tool, but I like to think that the late Sir John would be helpful and encouraging.
For me : adverse comments are only valid when the subject is claimed as a scale replica.
I hope that your experiences will benefit your next project.

Thread: Grumpy old men
12/10/2020 14:41:57

Not a mention of the dreaded and irritating Background Music on the Radio (Wireless ?), the TV (abbreviation with no explanation ?) or YouTube.
For example. During a Fred Dibnah programme the “music” is from the machines and I strongly resent it being drowned out by a background racket.

Thinking about “I'm well or I'm good”. I prefer the “never ask an older person how they are”.
The blighters (i.e. me) usually give a nice long boring explanation.
Thank you for the Grauniad reference Neil. Well said.

Now back to my treadle powered machines and my Middle English dictionary.

Thread: New Moderators
01/09/2020 10:36:35

Excellent recruitment in my opinion. What's not to like ?
A regenerated “ModeratelyOldDuffer” combined with a “Poole of Knowledge”.

I see no problem with the “Who moderates a Moderator” question.
Readers are fully familiar with our old acquaintance (and nuisance) the Backlash.
A powerful weapon in the hands of the Forum cognoscenti.

Dave and Mike. Welcome and enjoy.
Maybe keep a tin hat nearby just in case?

Thread: How to stop scam phone calls for good?
26/08/2020 23:14:22

+1 for Zan. My answering machine message is "Hello, this is Chris. If I do not recognise your number then I wait for the answer machine. Please speak after the tone".

A lot of callers hang up immediately, although the last part of an automated message usually gets recorded. The genuine callers identify themselves so it works OK for me.

A belated welcome Steven - from a local in Bletchley.

As implied many times : this is the essential and friendly forum for all.

Get started by adopting the old knitting guide line of "Knit one, purl one, drop one". If the first attempt is a "drop one" then that is usual practice. A scrap bin is an essential source of future material so don't be afraid to add to it - by accident of course. Just keep on enjoying. It really is good fun.

Thread: Quick change tool post
29/04/2020 18:01:38

Example of Lantern tool post with height adjustment. The thread is the Buttress type at 13 TPI.

The collar is free to turn but a piece of masking tape or similar with a thin permanent marker line on it can be used for location. Part of recovery project that is slow progress not helped by age and a heart attack. So it still looks rather rough.

Thread: Phillips vs Pozidrive and portable drills
06/07/2019 11:06:57

Here is my “take” / understanding of the difference between Phillips and Pozidrive.

The angle built in to a Phillips head is designed to “cam out” when the torque limit is reached. Hence no shearing of the head due to over tightening. The results can be a bit variable and depend on the pressure exerted on the driver.

Production tools such as air guns, battery tools etc. came with torque adjustment. The tool and not the operator provides the required torque limit. Hence the Pozidrive variation with a different head design was introduced. It retained the quick location of a driver with the pointed target system and the four extra notches added helped with visual identification.

Battery drills almost always have a torque slipping clutch system built in behind the chuck. Usually marked 1 to something and ending with a No slip drill setting. I rarely see anyone use the torque settings on a battery drill : and have met a number of DIY'ers who did not know the purpose of the dial.

Now hoping for more accurate detail from the many knowledgeable on this forum.

I viewed the message on a small screen and close up. All I saw was was the rings.
Then I sat back and scratched my head : and all became clear. DOH !

That should be the translated message sorted for you.

Thread: Metal Bandsaw - quality?
07/01/2018 18:00:08

@ Michael.

+1 from me for my 782XL saw, and for the supplier, and also for “the wish that I had bought earlier”. I also bought the vertical table accessory - the main use so far. Being able to lift it and move it about for convenience was also a plus. Happy with the blade as supplied.

Until I talked to the supplier I had not realised that the 782XL was a hand feed machine: not auto.
Planning to try an adjustable bar and weight on the head when larger cuts are required.

When it comes to any significant purchase my long held philosophy is :-

I have never regretted my extravagances but I have often regretted my economies. So yet one more for the “no regrets” column.

Thread: How on earth do they calculate electricity and gas bills...
22/12/2017 23:09:16

Neil.

Referring to your opening observation re. Direct Debits. Have a look at Bristol Energy. They have reviewed my DD's more than once a year : reducing or increasing as appropriate.

They also offer the option to pay in full each month. Providing a monthly reading gave me a zero balance each month. I reverted to DD because the pay in full system is only manual at present. The option to pay in full by variable DD is described as "we do hope to be able to offer variable DD ".

All the options are down to Customer choice and I intend to revert to full pay by variable DD when the option is made available. This will put my energy bills in line with my credit card as a "full payer".

Usual caveat: I post this only as a satisfied customer.
