I have to admit that I wear a peaked hat occasionally - to keep the veil, of one of my bee-suits, well away from my face. Two layers of material on one’s head can help prevent any nasty bee from stinging the top of the head, too.🙂

I also wear a smooth topped hat when working under my too-low garden bird netting - a button on top would not be a good idea. Thatch is getting thin enough without losing any more.

In photography they are an excellent addition to the camera bag as they enable one to keep the worst of the sun off a digital SLR display.

But it is as a collector and occasional user of old film cameras they really come into their own:

Turned back to front to use an eye level SLR in the hot sun, facing forwards to keep a focussing cloth from sagging when using a large format camera and most usefully of all - forwards again - to stop a waist level finder from filling up with water when it is raining.

Please can we avoid politics creeping into this thread, and remember to be respectful to each other?

Thanks,

Neil

just turned 71 and wore one for the first time a week ago......very strange.......

when I lived in the UK it was a beanie or a full on waterproof hood.......

sure makes a change to be in the sun virtually everyday.....thank goodness.....

the main reason for old people shrinking is the wet conditions experienced most of the time in the UK......

mind u plants wither in the sun.....hahaha........no easy way to get old gracefully I guess............

...............................I wore one at the rifle range and tried to sight in a benchrest target rifle. Had to turn it backwards!

That surprises me. I've been wearing ball caps for many years and don't recall the bill being an issue, even with others in benchrest competition's. What type of rifle / sight combination are you using if I may ask ? pict0065.jpg

I only have one - given to me when I visited Box Hill model engineers in Melbourne.

I think the biggest effect on IQ is whether you curve the brim or leave it flat.

You are obviously a multi-faceted personality. 😁

(And a man of many hats!)

An apparently chargeable offence (in the RAF) was to modify the peak of ones cap by breaking the stitches and tilting the peak downwards.

Certain clever DIs and MPs managed to achieve a result such that the peak touched their nose while their eyes appeared one on each side, thus adding to their fearsome appearance.

There’s also a joke somewhere about needing eyes wide-enough apart to see through the windows of a railway engine.

Anschutz M54 #1411 with a Nightforce 15-55 x 52 scope. Not much eye relief on full power so brim touches scope.

A Patriot at last albeit prepared to wear such headgear off the field shows a lack of class. Boater or Panama depending on the occasion, please, and certainly never show an affinity for headgear favoured by colonial seperatists. Global warming may lead me to upgrade to a solar topi...

..particularly after my DIY haircut - 12mm all over....

Wearing of a school cap was enforced at my school and a snood when I was an apprentice in the machine shops. I do not like wearing a hat but it is preferable to a burnt head so a panama and RayBans combat the sun, staying in the shade or indoors is my preference.

Greatly entertaining topic!......

I feel compelled to mention that the shooting fraternity have an interesting version of the 'baseball' cap...it has an extra long peak with side flaps that can be unbuttoned and let down......it's indispensible when developing ones 'tunnel vision'.........

Yes, a most entertaining topic.

Basically this type of cap is used for Cross the Course and High Power competitions, and is most beneficial when shooting prone on the line to minimize getting hit in the face from the ejected empties when an adjacent competitor is a semi automatic rifle. Nothing is worse than having a hot shell casing take residence behind your ear, ha ha.

"Anyone who isn't like me is an idiot".

Aside from the few genuinely light hearted attempts at humour there are some real elitist idiots commenting on here. Pigeon holing people because of their headgear, how childish. I tended to wear one because I don't like getting sun burned and they don't get in the way when rushing to get your head under cars in the pit-lane.

This forum is becoming a real hotbed of misery and small minds. Pathetic.
