Thanks for posting about the microscope. On a side note, for those interested in Darwin's writings about the origins of species, there is a fascinating two volume set of books by Dennis Hurd, M.A. titled " A Picture Book of Evolution " (1907).

Consider using a cheap leaf gage. You can adjust the number of leaves easily to suit your issue for small parts on the opposite end of your vice jaws.

What I find is ridiculous is that plywood is sold as 4' x 8' sheets, and dry lining is sold in the slightly smaller metric size. It means that if you layout first floor joists for sheathing, then the layout will come up long for sheathing the ceilings below with dry lining; so you have a considerable waste loss of material when installing a ceiling.

Photo #4 in your album looks like an Etalon height gage.

Looks to me like a sheet metal machine for reducing the ends of stove pipes so that sections can fit into one another.

Consider acquiring a smooth jaw vice of your choice and then carefully fill in the recessed screw holes in the jaws with Liquid Steel, JB Weld, or epoxy ?

A simple solution.

Yes, a most entertaining topic.

Basically this type of cap is used for Cross the Course and High Power competitions, and is most beneficial when shooting prone on the line to minimize getting hit in the face from the ejected empties when an adjacent competitor is a semi automatic rifle. Nothing is worse than having a hot shell casing take residence behind your ear, ha ha.

So where do I fit in ?

Your optician doesn't seem to be worth his salt if he can't order you a replacement frame from a catalogue to install your lens in.

Ask your neighbour if she has ever had her ears flushed out ?

When I was in my middle 40's my hearing became an issue. I went to a consultant and after he had a look said with a smile, " I can give you new ears." He returned to the room with a huge syringe ( minus the needle) and a small bucket of warm water with a peroxide type solution and proceeded to jet out my ears. After a couple of minutes chunks of ancient hardened wax came flowing out. When he was finished I was amazed at the difference in what I could once again hear. When I got home I noticed that I had to turn down the volume on the television and I could once again hear the kettle boiling. I've had my ears flushed several times in the past 20 or so years now, and can tell you it would be worth having your neighbour consider it.

It looks like the internal sliding part of a device for measuring a volume of powder, such as that for reloading cartridges; although larger.

Here in the UK you pay a mandatory extorsion called a television licence to watch basically rubbish and never ending reruns, So why would anyone expect it to be any different for radio.

I noticed currently there are a couple of Myford super 7 lathes on offer at the quillstar.co.uk site, if this helps ?
