I did not know Triumph and Norton made lathes also. They must factor oil leaks in.

Latest update i have just got around to sorting the J&S out beed delayed with work and health issues but i have removed the pump and motor emptied the oil tank and cleaned it all the tank is very rusty in places and with the cleaning has shown up a few pin holes that i will weld a plate over. my main question is does anyone know of a paint that i can paint the inside of the tank with like an epoxy or similar that will be ok with the hydroolic oil and help as a sealer?

Thanks Bob

Right next update is when i toog the grinder to the tank to clean it up loads of pin holes appeared so i cut the bootom off the tank and replaced it with some new 2mm sheet left it overnight with Kerosean in it not damp spots or drips in the morning soi have just painted it with machinery enamel as this seems to be what was in it from new just have to take the bed off now and clean out the gallerys and slides.

Lidl do boxes of oil seals/rubber grommets from time to time

You get and entire box from about 5mm up to 25mm for about a fiver

Worth looking out for if you're ever in for a pint of milk

Hi Bob nice to see you are still working on the grinder, how about a few pictures. I have seen many tanks on these with holes in. Any coolant, which is made by mixing water wuth soluble oil , gets into the tank and it sinks to the bottom of the 32 grade hydraulic oil which floats on water. The coolant deteriorates and causes rust to eat through bottom of tank. I have used a resin 2 part paint to court the entire inside of the tank and that after shot blasting first fills any holes and proofs against leaks.

Good luck and keep safe.

I've just aquired a 1968 540 which seems quite tidy.

Sadly its stood for a while outside under a sheet so I've been exploring.

ive removed the table to check and clean the ways which are ok. Piston rods are straight and clean.

similarly the tank which wasn't too bad although the filter is broken.

the biggest issue so far is the saddle, when winding manually it comes smoothly all the way forward but comes to a firm stop about 40mm towards the rear.

Any ideas what's causing this ? either way I want to lift the saddle to check and clean the fore and aft ways

does anyone have experience of the best sequence of actions needed to remove the saddle that they can share with me ?

any pointers gratefully received

Use to heat black pudding in boiling water, now I cover in film and microwave, as said never fry it goes hard. Dripping on white bread no salt, pork is favourite. Lard on toast, maybe a little salt. Treats of bygone era, kids don’t know what they are missing.

I used to love bread and dripping as a kid with salt on probably why i have had a tripple heart bypass and a cardiac defrillator fitted now
