I sharpen those end mills on my Clarkson grinder by holding them in a R8 collet and using a simple index wheel on the back. It works very well indeed.

Yes, better to keep as much grinding well away from the lathe as possible, or at least protecting the ways from errant grinder dust.

There is always one that has to state the bleeding obvious cheeky

The late, and lamented, John Stevenson used to sharpen End Mills and Slot Drills on the EMG12 and EMG 20.

Does anyone else offer that service now? I lack the courage to try regrinding on my Worden!

Keep an eye on **LINK** There is a chap that advertises there quite often. He does a sharpening service and proceeds go to charity. I think he does only the tips and not the flutes. I have his details somewhere but seem to have misplaced them for now. If I can find them I will post them.

regards

At the risk of being accused of stating the bleeding obvious, a 4-flute, end-cutting cutter is like a four-facet twist drill, but with a couple of extra cutting edges. So, if you can sharpen twist drills with four facets - or, better still, as split-points - you can sharpen these cutters. The extra two cutting edges will be conveniently out of the way, provided that the central arris is not normal to the 'long' cutting edges, as in Andrew Johnston's right-hand pic, and not as in Jason B's 'Rougher'. Nothing wrong with the latter, but far harder to set up successfully.

Have used this service myself last year; sent 6 cutters off to him, came back PDQ, all nicely done, paid him via P/Order, would recommend him any time … usual disclaimer. Get your Worden into action you will soon dispel your fear... wish I had a Worden … thinking

George.

Also to mention as well as wear to the saddle/bedways, the grinding dust can encourage corrosion on bare metal.

A well used lathe is normally soaked in oil though..
