I think it's a bit more complicated than that but not much info about

I just quoted all that was in the Dictionary, which if anyone wanted to research the item gives a start, but only just.

Many years ago I won a pub quiz by knowing that an ordontograph was for measuring gear wheels. I don't know the spelling used then. Please don't publish it if I was wrong, they might claim the bottle of whiskey back.
