Thread: How to remove heat marks from mild steel
14/03/2013 21:33:28

I use phosphoric acid at work to get rid of oxidised blueing from titanium welding (I know it's not good and we do weld this stuff in a bath of argon but still get oxidation so not perfect!!!). It works wonders and would assume this will be ok for steels (ok on 316 st. st. too) - not sure about the carbon content and what it may do to it???

Thread: Supplier of 321 stainless steel
03/01/2013 17:17:30

have a look at - http://www.aalco.co.uk/_downloads/literature/aalco-stainless-steel.pdf and search for 321. Alternatively call them, I am not sure if they deal with the general public but a call would sort that out.

Thread: Precision Ground Flat Stock

Posted by Siddley on 01/01/2013 18:01:27:

I use it all the time and it's not awkward stuff to machine in the grand scheme of things.

It's a tough steel but 'well mannered' , doesn't seem to work harden and I don't really take any special measures apart from allowing for it's hardness.

I don't think you'll have any problems.

Agreed, use cutting speeds of around 20 ~ 25 m/min and keep the tool and part as cool or as lubricated as you can and you will be fine.

Thread: Cnc conversion of WARCO WM18
20/10/2012 20:44:17

Thanks for the quick replies.

Of all the things I normally do (check with Google) and I didn't this time!!! Great conversion thread on the link above. I will have to study this for a while and take it all in.

Thanks again.

Does anyone know if there is a 'kit' of standard parts to convert the WARCO WM18? http://www.warco.co.uk/milling-machines/33-wm-18-variable-speed-milling-machine.html

Any help or information would be great!

Thread: Non de plumes
14/10/2012 08:01:02

I use mine from my amateur radio call sign.

I got fed up with trying my name and being offered alternatives because it was used, then trying to remember all the different logins that came from the necessity to use the username to log in.

No one uses M0BND except me!!!

I normally respond by signing my name, so I don't consider myself to be hiding behind my user name either.

Thread: workshop data charts
25/09/2012 09:47:53

@John S - a very good comment, it's not a one size fits all and yes, the black book is a lot of money (it works for me).Good idea about the A5 pouch thing - my top part of my toolbox used to be filled with copied data sheets pertinent to the jobs in hand at the time.

So I second this idea also.

Buy this book, it has an excellent array of references that you may ever need - like a Zeus book on steroids!!!!

J&l sell them, if you can get 5 people together that need 1 then they will sell for about £21 each.

Thread: What steel to Order
17/09/2012 22:29:50

I would suggest asking (what was McReadys) Acenta steel as they are the gospel in steels?

the 230m07 you mention is bulk standard EN1A mild steel, not sure about the 080a15 though (080m15 is EN32)

If the parts to be made will require a lot of stressful pressures then something a bit better than en1a would be required but should be ok for a grinding rest.

Thread: Note to self. Dont put thinners into Ultrasonic cleaner......
15/07/2012 08:40:54

Just a quick look on flee bay and this item showed up straight away 280832408592

It is all stainless construction so shouldn't melt if any dodgy fluids were to be used and left in for long periods of time?

Price isn't too excessive either.

mmmmm, poor you!

I have only used stainless steel ones.

That looks like a right mess!

Having no luck so far, does anyone have any links for me to try?

Thanks in advance.

Thread: Paper drawings to DWG possible??
28/06/2012 00:00:15

Don't use autocad!!!!!! I use draft sight EVERY DAY, it's free, want help? PM me! I make .DXF files for XYZ machines daily, use it to interpret drawings....... I can't say how useful this software is. It works on windows 7, Linux? Maybe(think so) Mac possibly(think so).

its soooo easy, give it 1 day with the correct free training?

Thread: Bridgeport Mill - Worth Re-building?
27/06/2012 23:51:57

Use it and love it 2 thou is nothing! These machines will drop if you extend the tables any way, maybe up to 1 - 1.5 thou when new (with weight on) don't get rid of it, use it but realise what error there is. 0.025mm to 0.05mm ??? Really? The limit is not that much of a problem, I am a production engineer which I regularly work to 0.1mm as a general limit and 0.05 is very easy to keep. I say keep the machine and use it for what it is.

Thread: Paper drawings to DWG possible??
26/06/2012 21:19:30

Definitely draftsight as it's free (unlike the robbing autodesk people!!!) and the interface and functionality is VERY close to autocad.

Excellent online help/videos and downloadable getting started 'ebook'.

if you get stuck ask on here or PM me and I may be able to help.
