Thread: Locked out of PayPal
31/08/2016 02:30:05

Try loging into paypal via thier website and update your details and any links to ebay.

Then do the same for ebay .

I haven't used windows 10 is it an app based operating system like windows 8 ?

Thread: roughing and finishing cuts on mill
30/08/2016 20:49:00

Take a look at Stefan Gotteswinter on youtube he did a video on roughing cutters .

If you are just surfacing a piece of plate and taking .010 or so off roughing cutters will not give you any benefit in speed and will give you the same finish as a conventional endmill. if you need to plough out some metal then a roughing cutter is what you want .

You can always leave the piece a little oversize and switch to a conventional cutter to finish to size , it really depends on what finish is called for .

One tip - don't buy cheap cutters they go blunt quicker and usually don't cut as good as a quality cutter .

Thread: Understanding Indexing/dividing Plates

Search youtube : look down the list for mrpete222 , thatlazymachinists and machiningmoments .

These three channels do videos on dividing and gear cutting - thatlazymachinists would be my first choice , his videos are excellent !

The workshop practice series of books Has a title " dividing " .

Thread: Locked out of PayPal

Are you having trouble loging into your account on the paypal website or when you try to pay for an item on ebay and ebay tries to link to paypal ? Pc or ipad/phone or android device ?

Thread: Abom79 Keith Fenner
28/08/2016 20:56:10

It was mrpete222 that lead me to Keith fenner and he led to adam booth (abom79) if you look on the home page of thier channels you will find who they subscribe to and I recommend you have a look at some of those channels as well .

Doubleboost is another that adam led me to .

Some others i highly recommend are that lazy machinist , Stefan gotteswinter clickspring ,robrenz ,myfordboy ,mrcrispin , emmas spare room machine shop.

There are many others but some seem more intent on standing in front of a camera and talking until they are blue in the face , the ones above are more about making or fixing stuff with minimal talk time .

If you want to learn something or you are new to machining or metalwork that lazy machinists and mrpete222 are where you need to start as they are retired teachers and have an amazing abillity to transfer their knowledge into your brain without you knowing it !

Thread: Magnesium Alloy
27/08/2016 10:17:46

Tweaked my interest this one as i know nothing about working with magnesium alloys so Wikipedia to the rescue !

I didn't see anything other than a mention that these alloys are highly inflammable in dust or small chip form and to keep the temperature below 470 C .

I don't think you will achieve this drilling and tapping a few holes .

I'm sure some one with more experience will come along shortly !

Welcome along Ray. I am not a model maker my interests are motorcycles. You will find the lathe useful not only for your car but for other projects as well. When you have a lathe you get 100 friends, I regularly repair parts for a local football clubs ground keeping equipment as well as friends bike stuff.

And when you introduced yourself to the forum you gained about a thousand new friends !

Welcome to the forum , I'm sure that with your engineering and electronics background you will fit in very well and i look forward to your participation whether it be a question or an answer to a problem .

Thread: Compressor only works for one cycle
26/08/2016 05:40:54

I wonder if the check valve may be jamming shut at the end of the first cycle and binding up so it won't permit proper air flow ?

Just a thought .

P.s how old is it ?

Thread: What to get: Imperial or metric
26/08/2016 05:25:08

If a DRO will be fitted then the dial graduations will not matter as you can switch between metric / inch with the press of a button.

More importantly i would be looking at what threads it can cut , some can do both metric and inch some only do metric or inch .

For most of what i do my tap and die sets keep me out of trouble - up to about 3/4 inch or 20mm anyhow .

Thread: Knurling machine
26/08/2016 04:46:52

Well it looks like I've been beaten to it !

The 3 wheel knurling tool already exists and is made by dorian tool international.

They have a youtube channel just search for dorian tool and Look for three wheel knurling tool .

I don't think I would like to have to pay for one but they sure look nice !

I still may make something similar but by using a 3 jaw chuck from a C2 lathe .

I had a look at cupronickel on wikipedia - interesting material.

It has a very high resistance to corrosion from seawater so it is used for piping and in heat exchangers.

I'm wondering if the knurl is for grip on a handrail or something ? maybe it is to key the surface for some type of coating like a plastic sheath?

Thread: Compressor only works for one cycle

Try running it up to full pressure then turn it off at the power switch and dump the air in the tank and then turn it back on .

If it runs ok you have a back pressure problem that is stalling the motor .

If there is no change i would look at the motor capacitors or check if the pump is seizing .

You didn't mention if it is single phase or 3 phase ?

Thread: Knurling machine
25/08/2016 20:48:00

Just noticed that the power switch has two speeds - beginner and experienced speeds perhaps ? Or hang on and really really hang on !

It really does look like something that should have a saddle on it - the horse riding type that is .

Could possibly be a disused prop from the tv show Get smart?

KAOS torture lathe !

What could possibly be made with knurled brake pipe ?

I would have thought the forces generated in the knurling process would have swaged the copper pipe before cutting a proper knurl .

Guess we will never know but still think the design of the knuling tool is special !

Ian.

25/08/2016 08:42:39

Thanks for the link Michael- i must get off my butt and work out how to do that !

Hopper,

I agree ! It's not a machine i would look forward to running ! It would be like running a lathe that is set up to part off washers - one at a time by the thousands !

I have no idea what copper nickel pipe is used for let alone a knurled 20 ft length !

The handle looks like it may be some sort of release for the saddle drive - maybe push down then wind the knob  to lock the handle down and it releases the chain drive ? Bush machinists half nut !  Or you just hang on to it for dear life when things go wrong with 15 ft of pipe flailing around behind the head stock !  It even has a vibration dampening spring to prolong your white knuckle adventure !  Bush machinists amusement ride !!!

I was browsing on the bay again and came across this custom knurling lathe and it has ( to me ) an interesting design for mounting the knurling tool .

It now has me thinking of making a tailstock mounted unit using an old small 3 jaw chuck

I have only included a photo of the chuck as the rest of the machine was just a rudimentary home made lathe with a simple power feed . Ebay.com .au search for lathe newly listed if you want to see the rest

And no i'm not the seller or designer !

Thread: Torque required for a small mill power feed
18/08/2016 21:56:05

I would look at car power window motors or the motor / gearbox unit from an old battery drill both have more than enough torque for the job .

I have the seig power feed unit which cost five tomes what it was worth but it works - sort of !

On thing to watch out for is if your motor is underslung it can hit the base when the table is wound fully to the right on the x axis , my mill has the DRO scale is on the same side as the power feed motor so i had to make an extension bracket so the motor did not crash into the scale unit .

Thread: Electronic Voting - Why Bother?
11/08/2016 18:59:53

The funniest thing i heard that this so callled hacking was from the Chinese in direct retaliation for the comments one of our swimmers made against a Chinese swimmer !

Hogwash !!!!!

I don't think the hacking was a threat just the Government covering up its ineptitude again .

The questions asked did not ask for anything that is not already common knowledge as far as the Government is concerned .

D.O.B, approx income , marital status, where i live ,religion etc are all common knowledge to the Government as it is with the exception of religion all on my tax return and my tax agent keeps a copy on file that could be hacked just as easy as any other site .

Half of that info i have to fill out just to subscribe to a magazine !

The day they bring in online voting will be the happiest day in my life , i detest the the waste of my day standing in a very long que to fill out a piece of paper that gets more complicated every year just to vote for some twit i don't like anyway but dislike that person less than the rest !

For the moment i will stick with the pre poll voting .

Name withheld - they might be watching us !

Thread: Mercer dial indicator
10/08/2016 21:13:22

Hi everyone,

Yes it is 0.002 mm resolution .

I plan on using it as a TDC finder on my model engines so i will have to make a custom mount .

Ian that old #196 starret back plunge are useful for tramming mill tables as you can always see the dial face , they use a spiral staff to give movement to the needle and i have no idea how they get a spiral accurate enough to give a 0.001" resolution but I they do !

Off the top of my head i counted 13 indicators in my kit , a couple of 2" travel units 1 cheapie and 1 mitutoyo , 4 Dti in starrett , mx ( chinese ), tesa and spi (rebadged compac). Dial gauges range from cheap units i keep on cheap stands for general workshop use as I don't care they get broken through to starrett , compac and now a mercer.

For my mini lathe and little taig i use a Starrett last word as it is nice and small which is on a little tiny cheap mag stand that after a bit of a tuneup works ok .

I think that my collecting of indicators gauges is rapidly becoming a bigger sickness than my collecting of machinery ! Worst of all when i ran out of room i had to stop buying lathes and mills but indicators are small so i can always find somewhere to hide another one !

I'm thinking of getting the mercer serviced by someone who does this for a living as my big sauusage fingers are not suited to playing with little screws and gears !

Hopper ,

There are a few recommendations i have seen -petrol is one another was shellite or white spirit , apparently they leave a minute film behind which is all that is needed and the toolmaker i used to work for said the same as any oil traps dust and eventually dries up .

I have also been told to use watch oil on the bearings and gears but my tesa dti says not to oil anything at all so iguess each manufacturer is different .

I have been hunting around for a noga stand but to buy new here is so damned expensive !

Once again thank you all for you replies and ideas !

Thread: Rc 45-50
10/08/2016 03:38:26

I will have a guess and say the 3/4 shank has a larger swing on the cutter than the 1/2 shank ?

If so turning down to a smaller diameter could cause it to flex more - not what you want on a flycutter.

I hope you are not wanting to turn down the shaft so it fits in a drill chuck as it will end in tears !

Maybe be easier to get the correct collet for it .

Carbide will cut it although getting a good finish maybe a chore , it is possibly case hardened and ground to size .

One problem can be if your finished size is right where the case hardening finishes as there can be spots with case hardening and spots without , the tool will skid on the hard stuff but cut the soft stuff and it will end up out of round and not parrallel probably not a problem when you want to remove 1/4 on the diameter.

45-50 rc is the hardness on the Rockwell scale of hardness , google Rockwell hardnes scale and you should find the info easily enough.

Thread: Mercer dial indicator
08/08/2016 18:03:43

Hi,

Thanks for all the replies .

Michael, the long island site was my first port of call unfortunately no luck there only the info about compac making them . Thanks for placing a link up there as some one may ead this in the futue and it will lead them to the best place to find anything out about measuring equipment .

Ian , i only tried it in my cheap indicator stand which probably had the mounting hole produced in a punching machine , the clamp is not vey wide so i will make a custom unit and see if it helps .

Pretty sure .002 mm but will check when i get home .

John , the back plate is one piece the rectangular lug houses a lever arm that transfers the movement from the stem to the rack .

As far as i can see it is unused but a little sticky from sitting for so long , the internals are mint and it is fully jewelled .

once again thanks for the replies !
