Thread: 3 -Phase Conversion of a Mini-Lathe

So do i but buggered if i could find where they were hiding smiley

Here is the motor sled and pulley set up (i have named it "The tower of power " ) it is made i little more heavy duty than what was needed because i used materials i had laying around but on the other hand it doesn't flex ! The jacking bolt on the front jacks the sled back to tighten the poly v belt , the motor bracket is hinged to adjust the v belt and this will also give me a clutch . The motor pulleys are 1-1/2 & 2-1/2 inch and the layshaft pulleys are 4 & 2 inch .

The 1-1/2 & 4 inch give a reduction of 2.6:1 and the 2-1/2 & 2 inch are set up as an overdrive of 1:1.25 and with a motor speed of 1380 rpm low gear will yield approximately 530 rpm and high gear 1725 rpm - this is without overdriving the motor via the vfd .

That's if we can negotiate a trade deal between both planets.

It would be a colony surely?

Maybe, unless the Klingons got there first.

Then it would be ab empire !

Kapla!

You have to watch out for reverse charges if you answer also , if I don't recognise a number I won't answer it . If it is important they will call back .

I was once stung by a website for premium content just by clicking their site on google , something to do with a video game site then i copped a bill from my IP stating i had signed up for this ! I eventually got my money back and they eventually banned third party subscriptions all together as it was a rort .

Thread: Optical Centre Punch any good?
14/12/2018 06:47:47

On mine i found the cross hairs were not on centre so if i turn the acrylic rod they wobble around the centre punch mark , not much though probable a few thou so i just average it out . The do type is spot on and one day i might make a new acrylic rod with accurately centred cross hairs . I also made a simple optical cenre device for the mill , i got the plans through a guy that made some videos for the mini lathe and mill called swarfrat but it was a while ago and not sure if he is still selling them . It works ok but in reality no mre accurate than the pointer on a wobbler .

I wonder if the postie will have an ION drive on his postie bike ? Maybe by then we will get issue 550 downloaded directly to a cranial implant ?

Neil ,

Maybe they won't be 3D printing a lathe coz you can just go to the replicator and with a simple voice command order any machine or tool you could ever want ! Now that replicator would cop some punishment from me i can tell you !

I would probably get locked up for replicator abuse !

How would 3D printing go in a zero gravity environment ? I suspect you would be chasing filament all over the station !

13/12/2018 16:05:23

Now you've done it Jason ! You mentioned the "M" word ! By the time issue 550 rolls around only the rich and infamous living off planet will own one of those lathes ! Picture in your mind a scenario similar to the movie Elysium .

I was hoping by then they would have finally answered the question "What lathe should i buy " !

I haven't seen a post from him for a long time !

Maybe post the question on the forum as someone here may have the same saw .

God , issue 550 and they're still on about bloody mini lathes !

Burning a hole in ya space suit would be a downer !

With no gas to ionize i wonder if an arc could be initiated or maintained ?

with no atmosphere to block out the suns rays you could probably use a big magnifying glass to heat up the metal and form a weld pool !

Dunno how they fixed it but it does raise an interesting question - can you weld in space ?

Thread: Straightening coiled small steam pipe.

One of these will do it but the cost 😭

https://youtu.be/4OVREFfoAAA

Mogens Kilde described a wire straightener in MEW 271-272 that could be adapted to do the same thing if you don't mind making one .

I wonder how you would go running the tube through a block of wood say 2 or 3 inches long with the appropriate hole drilled through  it then feed the tube through the hole and clamp the end of the tube in a vise and drag the block along the tube - might need a bit of soap for lube , never tried it - just a thought !

Thread: 3 -Phase Conversion of a Mini-Lathe

Today i completed the modifications to the alloy housing to allow the belt to feed through to the pulley , i also relieved the inside of the housing a little so the pulley face has some clearance and i then opened up the hole for the spindle about 3mm in dia . The cup shaped item on the end of the spindle is for the tacho proximity sensor

Thread: Mini-Lathe Repair
06/12/2018 23:34:48

The metal gears are more noisy ( i  have  just removed mine and went to belt drive for that reason ) they will need regular lubrication , one way is to drill a hole through the side of the head next to the shift lever and use a spray lube like lithium grease sprayed in theough the hole with the extension tube that comes with the spray can . Some use a combination of metal and nylon as it is usually the small gear on the input shaft that dies so the just replace that unit and leave the nylon one on the spindle , this negates the need to strip the headstock completely .
