Thread: Carbide Tips from Hong Kong

If you make a detailed breakdown of every monetary transaction involved in any UK production process from buying land to paying workers and then separate all of the taxes paid out you will see that there is actually very little real money moving anywhere. Im not against taxation but it accounts for a huge percentage of cost, which is one reason why we cant compete with some other countries.

Thread: Silver solder and Flux
07/09/2017 18:45:32

I only use one heat range if I can get away with it as it is so much easier to get a good joint without putting excess heat in. I make steam boilers boilers for a living and try to use one temp (630 deg). Beware that if you attempt to solder bronze bushes and the like to a copper boiler using higher temp solders you will most likely end up melting the bush before making the joint. Always use the high grade T5 flux unless you are making a one off small joint otherwise the efficacy of the solder quickly diminishes to the point that it ceases to function = bad joint. You can get away with using just one temp on anything but a small boiler because the heat is leeched away so quickly that the only place where solder will melt is directly where the torch is pointing. It takes a lot of heat to solder a boiler, heaven only knows how they did it with a parafin lamp. It helps that I dont use any form of heat insulation (other than the heat proof hearth bed) for boiler soldering thus allowing other areas to cool quickly, but you need an oxy set to achieve this reliably. Hope this helps.

Thread: What type of DRO is this
28/08/2017 06:26:40

I bought a 2 x glass scale dro from cheap as chips china and cant fault it, once youve got one you wonder how you ever managed to get anything done before you had it - absolutely brilliant accessory

Thread: Harrison L5's
28/08/2017 06:18:38

I make most of my boiler parts on my L5 but it does have some issues - the hole through the headstock is very small (never measured it) so very restricted in terms of putting decent size bar into it, and the top speed on mine is half what I would like it to be - but otherwise its bomb proof.

Thread: Silver soldering stainless steel
20/08/2017 23:39:21

As someone who uses upward of a hundred pounds worth a week....do add washing up liquid but only a fraction of a drop as it turns black and 'burns' if too much is added. People state that the ss will only flow where you apply flux - totally untrue, the flux melts and flows all over the place! The joint needs to be debris free but requires no additional surface cleaning so long as it is just bare metal, the flux will remove all oxide contaminants. T5 is fine for stainless but you have to get it plenty hot, and remember that it will only work for a finite time. Good luck

Thread: Slitting saws

Please allow me to be far less technical - slow, darn slow! Took me ages to get to this conclusion!

Thread: Unfinished vertical boiler
16/08/2017 20:24:41

Is that not a safety valve tapped into the top tube plate in picture two? If you get proper stuck pm me and I will help you sort it out for free - I make boilers full time. If firing on coal you will need to get the steam blower right also (doesnt seem to be one?)

This is the composition of common talc, Mg3Si4O10(OH)2, and this is for Crysotile asbestos, Mg3Si2O5(OH)4. Both are usually mined next to each other and despite reassurances to the contrary I wont have it anywhere near me.

Its a second hand mill, brilliant condition and paid very little for it. Daft thing is you can get a mt2 to mt4 adapter, bit of a step up in size there.

just bought another mill in mt3. does anyone know if and where i can get a converter from mt3 to r8 as all my other stuff is r8? thanks

Thread: Stopping eBay adds on Facebook ?

When you run malwarebytes put your computer into safe mode first, then run it. This way you will catch all the 'masked' programs. I was stunned by how many it turned up the first time I ran it this way.
