Thread: Brand Names
15/07/2022 17:00:26

The recognised brand name will probably still be trying a bit to maintain their reputation so will test and inspect samples after initially approving the manufacturing line. It is the rejects from that process that may then appear as another brand, or perhaps the same innards in a slightly different plastic case using cheaper parts but off the same primary production line. The typical pcb machine (German made even for Chinese lines) makes 1200 laptop sized whatevers per shift - at least 2 shits per day x7. Not many companies can sell that many all year so will only take say 3 days production per week. The components eg capacitors come off reels loaded at the beginning of the shift so it is just a stores ticket away from being run at the cheaper level.

A few years ago when I was looking to get about 3 million 12v power supplies per year we were offered prices from £2.50 to £7.50 depending on how long we wanted them to last. better capacitors cost more. That's one of the places a cheapo gizmo maker can instantly save.

Thread: Buying webspace and associated email addresses.

Godaddy and many others are aimed at tweenies for instant satisfaction using templates and their own software. This makes it very difficult and often impossible to do your own thing if you have any previous website creation experience for the past. Creating sensible file structures and lightweighe pages are out - massive javascript overheads are in. You are also locked to their software.
Wordpress adds cost and locks you to their software although in theory you can move to other wordpress supporting providers. It too is wrapped up in itself to make it impossible to maintain outside their package. eg all photos are numbered and filed in their structure, not a simple filing system.
Your current ISP probably gives you quite a few emails if you want them, as derivatives of you main one. Those provided with a web package will be locking you in. There are email only services to keep that separate for some portability.

Beware special offers. Our club used 1&1 now Ionos and they provided an unsolicited 'trial' of extra features we didn't want or use. At the end of the trial they sneakily almost doubled the price and changed the direct debit to 6 months so you wouldn't notice if not on the ball.

Thread: Hemingway flycutter

The thing to remember or get your head around is that the device is moving sideways not downwards. So it is the outer edge of the tool that meets the material first. You might make that bottom outer corner a sharp but fragile one which will leave lot of little grooves on the surface corresponding to your feed rate, or round it off as with a late tool.
Now have a hard think about which where the clearance has to be, and the equivalent of top rake.. You might want to leave that for a cooler day

( for future readers or foreigners it is currently circa 28-30C in the UK which we consider extremely hot although you might be reaching for a coat)

When ME and MEW stop being available in printed form you will get the electronic version for a while. When they have worked out your pattern of reading and interests all the basic stuff will be part of your subscription and all interesting articles will be an extra fee. Like Sky movies have been doing for years.

Hard to see but what is the shape of the cutter? It looks the wrong way round ie not deepest edge outwards.

Be mindful that these things are about 40W so are not meant to be run off 12v when the car engine is not running although Fizzy isn't (I assume) running a mobile workshop.

Note that the fig8 lead has a little nick out of it between the pins as a polarising key. Some leads don't have this. Of course for AC it doesn't matter so you can modify to fit.

Thread: Any info on these two items?
08/07/2022 13:51:50

Can you do a few more photos? Top one looks a bit like some sort of tilting base for use on a milling machine. Bottom one looks like part of some special holder for use on a tool grinder.

Thread: Closing a thread, why?

I have to say the only thing I find a problem on this forum is when people disparage clubs surprise Both St Albans and Exeter are a friendly bunch and I have visited clubs in 3 continents and always found the members welcoming of fellow 'brethren' just as Nevil Shute wrote about decades ago.
When I dropped in on Cambridge 3 years ago they immediately offered me tea and biscuits and gave me a guided tour (by train of course). Must get back to see their carriage shed in finished state.

Thread: 3D printed houses
08/07/2022 10:09:06

Don't assume the example here is the only one. There must be ten thousand videos on youtubr etc of other builds. Certainly some take advantage of the technology to print thin skins with an extra wide cavity to take maybe 8 inches of insulation. The big problem is you can't get good design though building regs in most western countries.
Currently it is 'trendy' to show the layers to show it is printed but soon they will add a skimmer to smooth off the outer face for rain shedding.

The biggest problem is obsession with printing which leads to it being used when other methods are more appropriate. With few exceptions in a 3rd world area it is better to use local labour, local materials, and no fancy tech.

Hello, I wonder where the South West starts in your book? laugh Do drop in on Exeter DMES if you are in the important part of the South West. We have a meeting this Friday at 7pm in St Katherine's Priory.

Thread: NEW LOOK COVER FOR MEW
06/07/2022 10:37:03

I think the small writing on contents at the bottom is usefull in two years when looking for that issue that had the optical punch.

I have pointed out before that the cover picture is important real estate for showing a picture of a model or project that is covered inside - not to be wasted on pictures of people.

The number tab at the top left is good for helping find a particular issue in a pile of magazines, so much better than a number in a tiny font somewhere in the clutter. It would be nice to put 'JUNE 22' next to it for when somebody tells you in five years that an item of interest was at a particular date, not knowing the issue number.

Thread: Mini Iron and Bronze Furnace
01/07/2022 19:34:12

Pat, great to have such advice. In the burner fuel optimisation do you do it with or without the crucible? Can you use a variety of sizes in a furnace or should they be matched, If the latter what is the best crucible to wall gap?

Thread: Lifting milling vice off mill table
01/07/2022 13:29:37

With their tendency to have bigger machines the Americans seem to more often be discussing moving big devices off their mill tables. have a look round the HSM forum. (hope nobody objects to mention of another forum - my view is everyone should be monitoring both these forums)

Thread: Quick change tool post ?
01/07/2022 13:22:09

Somewhere in the 'know your lathe' old SouthBend / Boxford book it actually says put the tool a little above centre. They don't mention why but the reason is to provide a component of force outwards to take up the backlash and reduce chatter.

Thread: Parkside Electronics
01/07/2022 13:15:15

So it's a school. Haven't any of their pupils (not students) gone on to read electronics at university? Otherwise look for your local amateur radio or maker club, then Model Engineering club.

If it still works in reverse you my be lucky that it is just the reversing relay control that has gone wrong.

Thread: Scribing Tool
01/07/2022 09:01:02

A gimmick looking for some suckers? I didn't get to see a price.

I think these sort of things are invented by er sort of inventors, picked up by some marketing suit with no practical experience and added to the portfolio. Then they get bought by wives and other relatives looking for a present that fills the right price bracket to look appropriate.

Thread: Quick change tool post ?
30/06/2022 15:54:43

I think 12" lathes can be just on the borderline between two sizes and the best one for your particular lathe can depend on teh exact height of the top of the topslide and the thickness of the bottom ledge of the toolholders. Careful measurement may be called for.
Also bigger isn't necessarily better as the holders are more expensive.
It is not mandatory to use the largest tool shank you can fit in and a common grumble is that doing so has put the top of the tool above centre height. Such people have rather missed the point about tool selection. It is seldom necessary for a model maker to use a bigger tool than 1/4" square.

There have been quite a few threads on this subject so with any luck a search will find someone else who has posted that they have the same lathe.

Can you have several computers under the same free subscription and get the advantage of cloud storage to access from either? I am using freeCAD but have to move files from PC to laptop to PC which is a bit of a faf.

Thread: I may be stupid but
24/06/2022 12:10:45

Owing to the movement of the scroll as mentioned by SOD above you should first do some tests on different diameters to see which jaw to use as teh last one that gives the best concentricity at each diameter and use that when it matters.

If the chuck was previously used by a brainless gorilla then the scroll will be distorted at common diameters like 1", 1/2" etc.
