Thread: How to measure bores |
08/05/2015 20:34:29 |
Peter My choice would be a telescopic gauge set in the bore and when removed from the bore measured across the tips with a micrometer. As has already been stated a certain 'feel' is required when using this method. To confirm bore is parallel use a dial caliper as below, you could also use this method to measure the bore by setting mic to desired setting and compare with caliper reading when in the bore. There are numerous methods used by engineers and we use the method for which we have the tools, if cost isn't a consideration there are many more choices, see my album for some more bore measuring tools. As Neil and others have said this is a model engineering forum so we may get the odd spelling error or typo, to me it doesn't matter, let's not deter members from posting by criticising their language or keyboard skills. Emgee |

JasonB, please advise what feed rate you used on the power traverse for cutting the fins ? |

JasonB, yes the same one. Emgee |

If you have one a lathe toolpost mounted live spindle with a slot drill would do the job. Emgee |

Is the plate too big to fit on a faceplate or 4 jaw so the 10mm hole could be drilled and then use a boring bar for the bearing seat ? Emgee |

Hi Jon IMO you can forget about a sewing machine motor for your application, not sufficient torque at any speed. Emgee |
Thread: Copper pipe bending |
13/03/2015 11:54:24 |
Hi Julian Your bends look good but I consider them to be sweep bends which no doubt suits your purpose. I too make single bends in the fingers but when a tighter radius bend is needed I revert to a home made bender, especially useful for making multiple bends and sets in the same tube to exact dimensions. Even with machine bending it is as you say important to keep the tube annealed to prevent rippling or flattening. Neil, we don't all subscribe to MEW so not aware of any article but thanks for the link to Fields Metals Emgee

Hi DMB When bending the ice moves in the pipe so the soap acts as a lubricant to prevent galling the surface of the copper or brass tube. |

Has anyone tried freezing soapy water in the pipe before making the bend ? This was on 'How do they Do it' when bending tubes for musical instruments and showed no distortion from the round when bent. Emgee |

Thread: Taylor Hobson cutter grinder. |

Clive, I thought there were a set of cams to provide back-off to the cutting face when the cutter was rotated so no further secondary clearance was needed. Emgee |

Hi Jesse I also use the telescopic gauges for measuring slots and bores. They are simple to use and you attain a feel when tightening, removal from the bore is achieved by tilting one end over. Measure over the gauge with micrometer or vernier, with continued use you will achieve repeatable and accurate results. Some other internal measuring aids shown in my photos, they were Emgee |

As Michael says Weidmuller terminals are designed for bare wire, they are clamp type, the screw operates a clamping plate, not to be confused with more widely used screw connectors where the screw end can if overtightened cut through multi stranded cable and indeed solid conductors. Emgee |
Thread: Mist coolant |
07/02/2015 21:38:35 |
Full details of a mist unit I use on my milling machine are in my Photo folder. Simple to make and effective in use. It does not fill the air with mist as some professional units so may not be effective for your use, it has an air supply (25psi is sufficient) that syphons coolant from a bottle, coolant is sprayed onto the job in droplets rather than mist, amount of coolant is controlled by raising the coolant bottle above the block height. The unit can be used without coolant to keep chips clear by forced air. The unit can be seen working in some of my Emco F1 videos on Youtube at ukmwg http://youtu.be/KRiiEywpzZk Emgee Edited By Emgee on 07/02/2015 22:06:24 |

Hi Blowlamp I think Neil L is referring to the shape of the indicator tip not a turned part, some similar tips can be seen in the Verdict indicator lists, you could say it is 'tear drop' shape. Emgee |
