Thread: Steel for flywheel?

Could you use a piece of 4" bright mild steel? If so MaccModels sell rods in lengths of 1", 2" and so on.

Thread: Stuart 10V rebuild
11/10/2022 12:07:50

Hi Jim,

Your 10V doesn't seem to be machined with much accuracy. I did machine the seatings for the bearings with square bottoms on mine (but I used stock material for the Soleplate, not the Stuart casting). For an engine that is not going to do heavy work brass should do as bearings material, I have used that on several of my models.

Hi Jim,

I built a vertical steam engine based on the Stuart 10 Standard and Cylinder, see here, that you may find useful. Good luck with the rebuild.

Thread: Backplates
09/10/2022 11:01:55

Hi Chris,

Some chucks are directly mounted onto the lathe, placing the chuck closer to the spindle bearings. So the chuck will only fit a lathe with the correct type and size of mount. Something like this (from Ajax):

Many chucks needs an adapter plate (backplate). As long as you can find a backplate that fits your lathe you should be able to mount the chuck on your lathe. Discussed here.

Hi Perrie,

Welcome to the forum. Making a new feed-screw is one solution. Have you checked lathes.co.uk? They may have a spare. I assume you have a copy of Know Your Lathe? There is also a Boxford group.

Thread: Fitting thin-walled Oilite bearings
29/09/2022 09:50:42

Hi Ian,

When I have installed Oilite bearings they do close up a little when pressed in, just enough to be a running fit. Are the 1" hole reamed to 1"? I assume you have read their Best Machining Practice or Engineering Assist?

Hi Alan,

There is a Centec site on groups.io, unfortunately the files from Yahoo doesn't seem to have been transferred to the new site. You could ask them for help.

Thread: Silver solder wire / rod size
23/09/2022 06:14:03

Hi Steve,

I have fabricated crankshafts by silver soldering (brazing), I make the parts slightly oversize so after brazing I can clean up any distortion. I usually use 1.5mm rod since that is readily available where I live but when I find 1mm rod that is what I buy. Good luck.

Hi Andre,

During the campaign against the Sovjet Union the Germans had access to Manganese in southern Ukraine. They also got Manganese from Hungary and Romania.

Thread: QCTP for WM290V
13/09/2022 13:54:01

Hi Steven,

Welcome to the forum. Warco sells several different QCTP's, have you asked them? On my 290 lathe I use this QCTP, a friend got a good price many years ago. I have made some extra toolholders.

Thread: Lathe carbide tool issue
12/09/2022 07:41:25

Hi Karl,

Welcome to the forum. Carbide tooling needs a rigid lathe, high speed and a certain depth of cut, usually at least the nose rasius of the carbide insert. I often use carbide for the roughing cuts and finish ith a newly honed HSS tool.

Thread: WILESCO THREADS

Hi Noel,

As far as I know the old ones use M6 (1mm pitch), new ones may use M6 x 0.75 so you should check yours first.
