Centec 2C

I'm trying to see if there is any information around on the Centec 2C vertical/horizontal milling machine. I've got a manual for a 2A and 2B which are helpful where they match, but there isn't a good exploded drawing of the vertical head (the type with a quill and clutch).

The mill I used most was a Boley UFR which is rather different in design (bronze plain bearings, belt drive and no gears) but I get the impression there may be a small leak of oil from the centec vertical head and it doesn't feel quite as smooth in running as I would expect (or is that hope?).

I think all those Centec VH’s leak slightly, mine did. I’ve seen a picture of one in Cherry Hill’s workshop- in an old MEW I think- with a little tin hanging from it to catch the drips. If it’s good enough for her…

There is no seal between the quill and the housing. With mine I have to just give it a wipe before switching it on at the start of the day

What you have is what there is I'm afraid of the mk3 VH though there is a Mk2 Automill op and Mtnce manual which I have never seen inside currently on ebay which is based on the 2C with extra bits you have no interest in. Theres also a spare gearbox for rather a lot of cash.

The old Centec site on Yahoo had loads of photos including the mk3 VH in bits, but that's been all deleted now.

Does the 2C not use the same vertical head as the 2B?

Hi Alan,

There is a Centec site on groups.io, unfortunately the files from Yahoo doesn't seem to have been transferred to the new site. You could ask them for help.

With an adapter.

Try the centric forum on Facebook. Some 2B, have the quill head of the 2C. However a lot of 2B,s have a fixed head.

Yes I've seen you over there, but I don't think there are any official diagrams or photos of the internals of the quill head.

I've been after some info on that myself.

I've also just uploaded a basic cross sectional engineering drawing, to the Facebook group, that came off the old Yahoo group, but can't speak for its accuracy.

I thought I'd downloaded the photos before the group's deletion, but I can't find any of the Mk3 head barring the diagram.

There's some info in this thread, to which I contributed some time ago
