Have you checked if it's trammed ? Although it would have to be out by a mile to see what your getting. Steve. |

I missed it 😂 I was at Spa and watched him do a couple of practice wheel changes from the other side of the pit wall on the Thursday evening. He looked really nervous. I'll watch it on catch up. Thanks for the heads up. Steve. |
Thread: advice on choosing a milling machine |
16/08/2017 12:54:13 |
Hi Giles, I have a late metric Tom Senior M1 in very good mechanical condition. I have the knuckle head and also the horizontal capability. What really improves the machine is the S type head. I originally thought I would purchase one in the future. Unfortunately for me the prices have gone beyond my means. Only last week one that was not a very good example went for £1200 on Ebay. I only paid £950 for my machine so paying that much for the head is out of the question. Steve. |

Pay the £110 and save yourself the bother. I paid £100 for my door with exactly the same symptoms as yours. The locksmith took an hour to do it and was cursing the whole time. Good luck. |

I believe the film has been released as a DVD here in the UK. I'm out and about today so I think I'll pick up a copy. Thanks for the reminder Ian.

Hi Chris, Can you confirm that the recess in the cylinder jacket (Fig7 page 85) is .040" deep as it states on the drawings. The dotted line on the side view is drawn shallower than the .025" external shoulder length so a bit confusing. Thanks, Steve.

Thread: Tap wrenches |
25/02/2017 08:25:51 |
Hi Benny, They look very nice. I have a few tap wrenches to this design that I have acquired and they all have the same annoying problem. The pin that acts on the tap stems have all burred up. This isn't a problem when using smaller taps. The problem arises when you try to use it on taps that are at the maximum size for the tool. The burrs stop the pin retracting into the handle. At this point I usually throw the tool down in disgust and have to rummage around for a bigger tap wrench. As you will own the tool from new you might not have the same problem. The guy that owned mine before I acquired them must have been an ape. 😉 You could make the 4mm pin out of silver steel and harden the tip. Just a thought. Steve. |

I mounted and tested the 4 jaw chuck I had converted from Hercus to Myford (see above 2 days ago). There was a visible wobble, and TIR on the front face was at least 10 thou, so I'll have to call the project a failure. For comparison, I tested my direct mount (no backplate) 4 jaw on the Hercus: perfect, with undetectable runout on the face. I can always reclaim the chuck by chucking it in my Chinese 8" 4 jaw and bore away my Myford threaded sleeve. I suppose it was a big ask to get a precision result with such a project. Simon, Like you said, bore the sleeve back out. Sell it on and buy yourself the chuck that suits your lathe. It's been stated previously Loctite is used on aircraft. It was used by Nasa, it's used in Formula One and I use it a couple time a week in my day job but there is no way I would stand in front of a chuck spinning at 1400 RPM that's been glued together. Maybe I'm just old fashioned but I like the way chuck manufacturers design their chucks. Steve. |

Loctite is good stuff but I wouldn't trust it for that application. Steve. |

I've set my stop button to coast to a stand still on my Boxford AUD. When setting up the E-stoppel I obviously wanted the chuck to come to a stop much faster. Not a good idea to set it much less than .8 of a second. Oh was I glad I had a 1" x 8" piece of brass in the chuck. 😉 |

I haven't got access to the article but wouldn't the pendant move from machine to machine too? The only problems I can think of would be that unless your motors were the same you would need to tweak the parameters from machine to machine I'm sure the manual that came with my VSD states it's not recommended to fit a plug anywhere in the 3 phase supply line though.

Thread: RDG involute gear cutters. |

Brian, All the gears I require can be cut with a number 2 and 3 cutter. That's £35. No idea what a 18DP 14.5PA hob would cost? Steve. Edited By fishy-steve on 27/01/2017 19:56:08 |

Update. Used the cutter I purchased from RDG. Very pleased with it. It was indeed manufactured by HBM and I will be buying more cutters from RDG. |
