The exhibition is moving to Doncaster Racecourse next year and it is due to the hike in fees imposed by Harrogate Showground.

No, nothing to do with the two exhibitions that were run by Meridienne. This is the rebirth of the Northern Association of Model Engineering Clubs' Exhibition.

Thread: Etching Brass and Photoresist

so the toner is on the side in contact with the photo resist.

This really is essential. If the image is not in contact with the resist, light will spread between the top surface and the resist, giving unsatisfactory results. You need 'right reading ... emulsion down'. I never use a vacuum.

I have never found any combination of desk top printer (be it inkjet or laser) and commercially available media to give satisfactory results. There is invariably a degree of opacity in papers, even OHP film, that has to be compensated for in the exposure time which then leads to ragged edges to the image. To make nameplates I only ever use lith film produed by an immagesetter (availalbe from an ever decreasing number of traditional printers) high enough resolution and opaque enough to give acceptable results. Nothing else comes close. This is probably not necessary for PCBs but if you want to etch very fine images it's worthwhile trying to find a firm that can supply lith film. They will work from a PDF supplied.

Hi David

It could be one (or more) of many things. I would say that 8 year old photoresist is probably pushing your luck a bit. But it could also be that the developer is a bit too cool - have you tried it warmed up? Try it about 20 deg. but not 'hot' or it will strip it before you can blink! It could also be too weak a developer or underexposure, as John says. I would try increasing the temp a bit and also gently rubbing the surface of the plate while it is in the developer (usual H&S common sense applies).
What are you using as a mask? If it is allowing light through at all you will, of course, get this result.

It's a black art to be sure !!

Thread: Searching info and photo's Steam Yacht
19/04/2015 23:19:50

Hello Brian

Welcome to the forum.
I have started a new thread on the Traction Talk forum (not related to Model Engineer) where someone might be able to give you some answers. I have done this just by posting a link to your question on here.

Good luck with this project. I remember riding on Harry Lee's Steam Yachts at rallies when I was much younger. At one time they were the only surviving steam powered set in operation.

Just to let you know, at Jason's suggestion I asked Martin Ranson to look in on this forum but he seems to be away on holiday. I haven't managed to get him by phone or email since the end of March.

That looks a lovely job too!

I think we should have a gallery in the magazine of all the slightly different interpretations of this design. What do you think?

Thread: MEX 2015??
13/03/2015 22:10:48

A formal announcement will be made in due course.

There will not be a Model Engineer Exhibition following the established format at Sandown Park in 2015. There may be an exhibition in 2015 - of which news will be made public at an appropriate time - and we are in the planning stages of an all new MEX 2016 but, at the moment, there is no further announcement to make.

Thread: Spray Resist.
07/03/2015 19:32:13

I used the stuff for years and found it to be consistently inconsistent. Sometimes it works a dream and others it infuriates you to the point of screaming. The problem would seem to be the spray nozzles. Some allow a nice, fine covering and others dispense the stuff in blobs. It's just your luck what you get... really! You also need to be in as dust-fere an environment as you can achieve.
Don't forget, also, that photo resist has to be applied to the perfectly clean surface in safe light - i.e. yellow or, at least, a very poorly lit room. As Neil says, sunshine will effect exposure - if you can find any.
When I moved over to negative, film resist, life became much simpler and far less stressful.

Centriufugal force - a force referred to by second rate mathematicians and third rate physicists. There is no such thing. One can only have a lack of centripetal force.

Thread: No. 4501 The MEX Judges Reports
06/02/2015 00:52:52

In defence of the Judges - and, possibly the 'Editorial team' (i.e. me) - the person judging cannot possibly know to what use the tooling is intended to be put if there is nothing to tell him. You have, to some extent, asnwered your own question by recognising that Judges Notes are an important part of the entry, which is why it is mentioned on the entry form and also why we "bang on about it" whenever we publish Judges Reports in either magazine. If some aspect of the entry is not obvious to a judge he can only make assumptions and base those on his own experience/knowledge. Points are awarded for a number of different 'aspects' of the entry; in the case of a model it is, perhaps, a little more obvious what they are than in the case of an item of tooling but I would argue that it is very well structured indeed. I am sure that the value and success of the problem solving is very much taken into account - as far as it can be understood by simply looking at the entry. The page space for the report is, of course, limited and we do try to present good sized photographs when reporting on the exhibition. The judges try to give a very fair appraisal of how they have marked when reporting in the magazine and I can say for certain that all criticism is deffinitely intended to be constructive. It is a difficult job.
I am glad you chose to enter the vice and sincerely hope you will enter your work again in future. It was much admired!

Then again there are those of us who like to fabricate a model from scratch and don't really need any castingssmiley This also gives us a chance to adjust the size to suit our machines.

Indeed.

I think, as David says, we might publish some basic drawings with the article. Should be good...!

I am strangely drawn to this engine and David has written a nice little article. Unfortunately the whereabouts of the patterns is apparently unknown but I am still inclined to publish the article. It's certainly uncommon, compared to the Savage version of (essentially) the same thing. You never know - the patterns might just turn up once it goes to print. That would be nice, woudln't it? Is anyone familiar with the surviving foundries of the Derby area? They may just be in a cardboard box in a cupboard somewhere...

Thread: Vol 126 copy please?
12/01/2015 12:19:06

On behalf of a reader, I would like to get hold of a copy of pages 656/ 657/ 658 of Volume 126 (1962 I think). If anyone has unbound copies and could scan those pages for me I would be very much obliged. My copies are all bound so I can't copy them.

Many thanks
Diane
