Finished my first project after this past year setting up my garage conversion & making stuff to make stuff with, mods to machines etc.

Tried to post vid of it running but can't seem to load it , seems that album format only accepts JPEG/JPG pics... any advice of how to do it...?

finished project (1).jpg

Had to do a bit of tweaking as there was a tight spot that needed resolving, further pics in my album ' simple oscil' engine'.

Nice pleasant start to 2014, Happy new year to all forum readers.

Thread: Stuart 'Victoria' : a beginners tale..
27/12/2013 11:39:52

Hi Allen/Roy

Thanks for the link, I had scoured the Stuarts catalogue (2010) from front to back & not seen the relevant part #, the only description I could see was in the 'Brass rods / sections' in the back which give part #'s starting as 32- xxxx- xxxxx. Must jot it down for future ref, thanks again

Hi Allan

Super work continuing; going back to your bit on the gland set up & machining you said 'using the 2" elliptical brass supplied '...so I assume that this came with the kit, do you (or anyone else ) know of where this material can be purchased as a separate item, I've looked at the usual suppliers on t'internet but all I can find (at the mo' ) is the usual, round, square, hex' flat, etc. I'm thinking maybe a 'nice to have bit ' available for future,

Cheers

Thankfully I didn't get a granddad onezie, close call mind you, but got a nice little 2" precision vice & a 3" DRO Vernier to tuck in my workshop coat, so happy with them.

Thread: Remote display sources for DRO Chinese calipers
22/12/2013 11:53:39

I fitted a pair of DRO's to my WM 16 beginning this year, IIRC Dias fitted the same but may have changed ?

Bought from ArcEuro in Jan 2013 @ £67.50 Inc. p&p,... usual disclaimer, quite easy to fix on to mill & readouts are quite clear enough for me. Whilst I admire & applaud all you guys with electronic expertise (my background being Mechanical & have always left the electrikery side to 'Sparkies' & 'Tiffies)' to make up your own, my ethos is KISS.. Keep It Simple Stupid.

See my album 'DRO' for pics of fixing.

For final cuts fix a tyre depth DRO gauge to your crosslide with earth magnets ( see my album photos) set 0 & away you go without fear of backlash problems... 0 -1" DRO tyre gauge off eBay for £ 5-6.

Thread: workshop heating
15/12/2013 12:14:11

My garage conversion is in a previous write up on 'heating the workshop'. In essence studding frames, Celotherm insulation (same as Kingspan) fitted, overlaid walls with OSB sheeting, Celotherm fitted to access door & roll up door, loft space rafters covered in plasterboard, loft insulation on top ('Space Blanket' gives 6" thickness),so far this year has kept the temp stable at 10*C even with the warm weather we've had, supplemented for winter with 2 small oil filled rads,1.5 Kw ea. bought from the local supermarket on offer for £19 ea. one either end of garage,18'x8'  which were switched on this week for the first time for about an hr ea.day, brought the temp up to a cosy 14-16*C, then turned thermostats down as it was getting overwarm, so far no need for dehumidifier & no signs of rust. the key word for me is 'Insulation'

Thread: First lathe recommendation.
11/12/2013 10:10:35

I have the same machine as Rik & find it suits my needs most admirably so far, I haven't had the palaver about screw cutting as Rik as most of the few threads I've needed were handled by the tailstock die holder & headstock handle method so I can't comment on the changing gear scenario, until I need to create some other thread than what is set up in original arrangement I'll stick with the above, but we made our choice for our needs at the time. I can see the benefits of a screw cutting gearbox & should I ever get another machine then I would look at it having the gearbox set up, but for what I do at the moment....

Thread: Rotary table type?.......
07/12/2013 12:28:24

I bought & fitted a four slot chuck mounting to the four slot rotab' I' bought last year, not having a tapered central hole but tapped with a Whit' thread for some reason?, never the less I machined an adaptor to suit the thread in the rotab & recess in the back of the 3 & 4 jaw chuck back plates, which both happen to be the same. I used the adaptor to centralise the rotab' & then centralise the job to suit using the 4 jaws, or if using the 3 jaw it centralises itself, (I double check with dti) . I remade the clamping plates & T nuts out of decent steel as the supplied fittings were the usual Chinese crap metal & substituted cap screws for the hex head bolts supplied, much more secure clamping. I have a short set of pics in my album if you want to cast a glance in there.

I generally take HQS as Asian speak for ordinary HSS, the next grade up for me would be Cobalt, but never having tried any...?

Thread: Could someone ID this for me please
28/11/2013 12:00:36

As with other comments; it is either a Myford or one of its clones, I have one (Bison) fitted to my Warco 250V-F & the hole is for a anti rotation / locating pin which I have fitted, by the way yours should be rotated 90* so you have the facility to have a boring bar at the front of your saddle. I have drilled another location hole in the top slide so that I can place my post as yours is to allow extra OD machining capability.

Maybe in the wrong thread but..

I recently bought a Samsung tablet & when trying to log in to the website I find that the black title bar has dropped to cover the log in boxes hence preventing me logging in, it seems as though the 'field' box has shifted in the 'format', the home page/log in is fine on my desktop & laptop but see pic of my tablet... can anyone / MTM advise help?
