Thread: Clocking on a 4 Jaw indepdent |
20/10/2022 13:04:59 |
Vic, It is easier if you work in just one direction, say towards yourself, Slacken jaws where the job is too far from you and tighten those opposite to push the work your way. Use a DTI on a true surface as the errors get less and you will find that method works evert time. Final adjustments will be to chase thous by tightening the jaw need to move the work by that degree of error. Regards Brian |

Hello Bob, The angle doesn't really matter, something in the order of 45 degrees will do perfectly well. The lock works by the camming action of the two taper faces being pulled together within a hole bored to contain them and reaction forces resisting the outward thrust from the tapers does the job of jamming and therefore holding the head locked to the pillar In your design, include a short compression spring between them to help the two haves of the clamp release when the clamping bolt if freed off. David, Try Jenny Blackwell of J B Cutting Tools [phone 01246 418110] The screws are known as tip screws and can be supplied with the correctly fitting Torx head wrench, small ones with a 'flag' type side grip to limit the torque you can apply 3.5 mm x 0.8 mm is a standard metric thread and you should be able to run a tap down the female part to clear out debris Brian |

Hello Jack, Nice to hear from you and from so far away. There will be many here who share your interests and will willingly answer your questions, I'm not into modelling but have an interest in machine tools and their uses, restoration and problem solving. Have a nice day Brian. |
Thread: Myford VMC rough rise fall Z axis/ knee |
16/10/2022 10:09:38 |
I might try reversing one of the gears on it's shaft to present new faces for bedding in and check both thrust bearings while they are accessible with the knee propped up on a wooden block. EP 90 gear oil as lubricant might also impart some improvement. Brian Edited By Brian Wood on 16/10/2022 10:10:40 |

Jason has once again found the information you needed and it confirms my findings today Brian |

Hello Martin, I've taken my Record #3 to pieces. The thread is odd at 0.210 inches across and very definitely 20 TPI, so make what you will of that! I might be inclined to tap it out at M6 and mark the plane accordingly. Best wishes Brian |
Thread: Gear seems to be missing |

Chris, It shouldn't look like that, a tooth has fractured off. You will not notice it until you try working in backgear. Brian |

Thread: Myfor ML7 main spindle replacement |
28/09/2022 13:06:43 |
Hello Mick, I know this sounds very much along the lines of "Bodge it and fix it" but I think it might be worth trying; after all you will still have the other alternatives open to you if it doesn't work. If you have a 2MT drill with a poor taper fitting that you are prepared to sacrifice if necessary, try a little fine valve grinding paste on it. Run the lathe slowly and hand hold it in a glove, biasing the cutting to reduce the ovality and with it hopefully the runout. Test frequently with a test bar if you have one, having cleaned things up between runs of course! In my early days with far less equipment and knowledge, I recovered the 2MT socket on an ML4 that had been scored with a boring bar, not by me I hasten to point out. It ran true after this work and still gripped taper tooling and the lathe went on to allow me to build my Dore-Westbury mill, still very much in use 30 years later. I sold the lathe on later, but with a clear conscience. I feel for you, not a nice thing to recover from. Regards Brian |

Yes, I have used the method, that is why I recommended it Brian |

How serious is the taper damage? Tracy Tools sell MT taper reamers for a whole lot less than the costs you are quoting. They will clean up burrs etc, any gouges don't matter as tooling with 2MT tapers will bridge over those. One of those could save you a great deal of work and restore socket accuracy. Regards Brian. Thread: Which inspection borescope |
26/09/2022 18:27:35 |
Hello Roy, Getting enough light into the area is the main difficulty. borescopes are generally "read only" devices and do not add any light at the point of interest. You might try running the lathe in reverse with the tools upside down to give you a better viewing angle. Regards Brian |

Thread: Chester Mill Sale - Value? |
10/09/2022 16:08:54 |
Hello Matt, Sorry to hear of your loss and the circumstances behind the sale. Round column milling machines tend to command sale values of less than the more rigid dovetail column machines mainly because of the loss of position with the cutting tool if the job involves a change of height during the course of the work. There are workarounds with laser pointers and the like, aimed at fixed vertical positions in the workshop but it is all a faddle to be managed and can become tedious. That said, your late father's machine has barely been used, appears to be in good shape and is well equipped with desirable accessories such as a DRO and the power feed to the table motion. I imagine it should fetch a rather similar price to a decently cared for Dore-Westbury machine, say £600-£700 or even more if there is competition for ownership I wish you luck with the sale Kind regards Brian PS There were some markings on the column at the top of it which puzzled me, but I don't suppose the head can be lowered to the point where they might be an issue. Edit 2 Oh silly me, it is the chuck I can see which is superimposed in a strategic position on the column ! Forget the comment please Edited By Brian Wood on 10/09/2022 16:12:37 Edited By Brian Wood on 10/09/2022 16:16:20 |

BT does a pretty good job in fielding that sort of rubbish. I get very few doubtful emails now and those that do sneak through are the ones to be careful of. Brian |
