Thread: Ether
23/08/2023 16:54:04

Apparently you can use John Deere Diesel start which is 80% ether (If I can find it) and a drop or two of Nitro Methane !!!

23/08/2023 14:46:08

Is this the same sort of stuff that we used to make model diesel engine fuel from

"Methyl-tert-butylether (MTBE) 99,5+%".

I am looking to make some model diesel engine fuel as I can't find any that I can get by post here in France.

If you want a real bit of fun, strip the clockwork motor down , remove the spring by unwinding it, clean it , oil it and replace it.

Plenty of swearing, cursing and wishing you never tried it ! How do I know ?

Thread: What is this rule used for

that is that one solved - mental note - Must start drawing more triangles !

Thank you gents.

I cam across this rule n with a load of clock making tools, but suspect it got there by something unconnected ??

Its a plastic rule with 2 scales one in cm/mm and the other in inches and 1/16".

At one end is a clear plastic 'reticule' with a raised point in t5he centre. The reticule can rotate 360 degrees in the body of the rule. At the same end, the end of the rule is marked in degrees 0 - 75 in 15 degree increments. At the other end, there is a mark to indicate the centre line of the rule.

A clear lockable/sliding plastic cursor can be positioned up and down the scale and there are two "pencil point " holes that are 1" apart. By pressing down on the reticule and inserting a pencil in one of the hole, an arc can be swung once the cursor was locked in position.

By locating the reticule on to a point on a line, the rule can be swung to an angular position and a line drawn through its origin.

The maker was TRIMAN Ltd ref 1001

So what was its intended use ?

You can buy cheap boxes of very small drills off of the net. This is one used for drilling holes through a carburettor jet. 0.34mm (0.013" approx)

Test Boiler

Looked at using a pressure switch similar to those on air compressors. We use similar over here on water pumps but I am wondering if they will be too slow to react and the lag between on and off and consequent delay in heating/pressure drop. I did wonder if temperature measurement would be a better way to go however that would have its own problems.

There are 12 volt 120watt car kettles, but they are slow in getting up to temperature. Domestic kettles are 2000 watts. Perhaps 500watt would be better .

This would be a boiler for home testing of injector(s) and drained down when in storage.

I am thinking along the lines of using a disposable 2.2 litre CO2 bottle. Its certified test pressure is 163 Bar and Working pressure 100 Bar.

Silver soldered steel tapped bosses for all outlets.

200watt 240 v tubilar heating element £6:00 (Alliexpress or similar).

Working pressure of 100psi and test pressure of 200psi (14Bar) - this is well below the original design pressures albeit with modification of added bosses and elevated temperature.

These are my ideas, Am I dreaming ??

I am thinking of making a small boiler to test steam injectors and looking for a simple boiler which would have an electric heating element, preferably 240volt.

Working pressure - 90 psi

Volume 1 - 2 litre.

Can anyone point me in the direction of existing plans please, or purchase of same ?

Why do you want to paint them ? It wouldn't prevent scale build up. Is the paint to protect against erosion (Rust or other oxidation).

A similar but more "sophisticated" oil pressure button was used on early Austin 7 cars however the engine pressure rarely rose above 20psi and normal running was probably 5psi.
