Bob. take out a court judgement against the DVLA ?? Even if it gets thrown out, it should elicit some sort of response from the DVLA ??

Otherwise carry on driving, get a ban, keep on driving etc until you get a prison sentence - cheaper than an old folks home.

My French driving licence photo is very feint yet the Carte de Sejour (or permit to reside in France) is so dark, you can't see where my pullover starts and my neck stops.

Glass bottle threads are probably the coarsest "popular" thread especially the ancient ones. After that, Eddison light bulb threads. Nowhere near a rope twist though!

Back of a fag packet I used just a slash, proper drawing, arrow heads. Do they use a double dot (Like the double arrow) to indicate that the drawing did not show the full length of the component ?

Hi Tim, that is a bit odd, however, round parts can be held in a chuck from a lathe and the chuck clamped to the milling table. BUT the milling vice may have been used on a drilling machine and become separated ?? Large components are often clamped to the table as they are too large for a vice.

Which model Southbend lathe have you inherited ?

I found an old trumpet for 50 centimes at a car boot that had suffered damage when it had been driven over by a car. There was enough straight section for a couple of LBSC whistles. Have a look for wind instrument makers / repairs ??

I bought one when I was younger, soon got fed up with pulling the lever back and forth. There are various designs to motorise them, have a look and see if a future project would make one of these machines a little more acceptable.

If its for the harpsichord, they used short lengths about 3" long I seem to remember. I had to make a few many years ago in brass for a friend. I believe they were used for the connection between the keys and the "pluck". So apart from wastage, short lengths would be OK

I think Martyn is trying to make the pedal as shown on bottom right of the sketch. The 20mm collar supports the clutch release coiled spring.

My drill won't fit into my chuck, the battery and motor stick out too far - what am I doing wrong?

I have an EVOLOUTION chop saw for metal. Fantastic for stuff like steel angle, 1/2" diameter bar, flat bar sections etc, BUT you can easily damage the teeth when cutting 1" dia bar and over. I certainly would not attempt cutting a bit of steel where the section of blade contact was more than 1". Of course, it does cut other metals, wood etc but again, HTS like reinforcing bar does not improve the blade although with care will cut it.

It is fast, noisy and the chips fly off and safety goggles, face mask and gloves are "mandatory" - even wearing overalls and ear muffs!! However it is compact, portable and reasonably priced.

Depending upon size etc, could you use a 1/2" socket set extension as "stock" material to make a new screw, or perhaps a large hex head socket screw. Ie re-purpose some other tool with an existing socket to fit your chuck key.

Perhaps you should use a BIG ' C' spanner, but never seen one used on a screw on chuck.

Appaently, TELEX is still used in some financial exchanges. Years ago, late 70's, I wrote a program to punch TELEX tape for all overdue purchase orders. The TX operator had a fit when we presented her with 900 ft of tape and a few hundred TX numbers to dial up.

Anyone remember FAX ?? FAX Group 1 (1974) transmitted an A4 document in about 6 minutes. By the time Group 4 arrived, transmission speed came down to about 1 minute.

Today, who even uses FAX.??

Yes, (I assume you have the 8tpi leadscrew) - you need the 127/100 conversion gear set. Other combinations give a near enough conversion.

Get a copy of the Boxford "Know your lathe" publication from the net and have a look at page 75 where it shows how to use the metric conversion gear and the screw cutting gear box combination.
