My cast of Shapers in order of size: Paul |

That looks a great machine, I do like shapers and have 5 of them but they are getting harder to find. Your'e lucky to find something like your Edgewick and it looks complete too. Is the small ratchet on the left side of the ram some kind of auto feed ? Regards Paul |

I modified mine by drilling three extra holes in the sanding backplate so the belt is vertical. Just seemed more useful at this angle ? +1
As standard they are a peculiar angle probably set like that to suit them what mess around with brown stuff |

Keep milking the subscribers like this and numbers will reduce, though I have no doubt that the bean counters behind this have also accounted for that on their spreadsheets... |

I bought an Aldi Combination Grinder/Sander some time ago the idler drum was badly out of round I remachined it to try and stop it jumping around it's still rough but useable, amongst others I have an RJH Bison grinder that has 12" wheels that you can balance a cup of tea on the Aldi combination machine will stir your tea for you |

370w = 1/2 hp Convertor or Inverter? My Teco 2hp inverters will quite happily run something like this. Have you checked it's not still wired star 415v You could run it (at around 60% power) just using capacitors there are many guides on the net how to do this, basically 2 capacitors one to start and one to run the start one is switched out once the motor reaches speed. The values of the capacitors you will have to calculate using the motors parameters against your chosen formulae/values. Optimum capacitor value varies with motor design and load popular (but by no means comprehensive) Capacitor values for a 370w motor might be: Run Cap 20 uf Start Cap x2 run capacitor value for light loads and 3 to 8 times as load increases. Start cap normally switched in and out using a potential relay or a timer (you could do this manually). The workshop practice series has a few very good volumes on using three phase equipment on single phase, I use a mixed bag of inverters, homemade converters and a homemade rotary convertor. Regards Paul (Disclaimer: Please do not attempt any of the above unless you are competent/trained)

Scott, a chunk of aluminium from the scrapbox of unknown type, the pins are recovered printer shafting pressed in with an interference fit of around 0.0005" ish I didn't even case harden them and they have worked fine for years. No plans just machined to what looked like reaonably sturdy dimensions, something worthy of note though the hole centre spacing in the vice wasn't as accurate as you might expect with on average 0.020" difference. Hi George, does the 4" precision type 2 vice have lugs on the body to bolt it to the machine table? I have the type with holes in the side but made some of these to mount it on my milling machines and shapers, here is an Arc 100mm precision vice mounted on my small Taylor Mill (18 x 6" table)

Scott,
I have both vices, the precision vices from Arc are The Axminster "Kurt" clone is an "eastern" manufactured item of suspect quality see this thread for some detail **LINK** Regards Paul

An old friend of mine had a "perspective" about H&S his view was that it all started with a need to find somewhere to shunt the "know all" knobheads into.....so they create the H&S industry and "promote" all the forementioned into it....but this monster took on a life of it's own....
Whatever happened to good old common sense |

Hi Joe, I have a 1953 Model "A" imperial Boxford it's been a great machine over the years, if I wanted to replace it I might go for another Boxford but a later 5" MKIII AUD. With belt drive machines like mine when running they can be almost silent something to consider if your workshop is perhaps inside a house or flat. Parts are readily available and lots of South Bend bits like the steady rests, changegears can fit as well as the Boxford was designed from the SB 9" machine. There are a lot of poor quality machines out there for silly money, if you are not entirely sure what to look out for you could do a lot worse than contact one of the dealers who regularly advertise in MEW to supply a machine. The legendary 'cheap shaper you can pick up for pennies' seems to be as rare as rocking horse poo. I wopudl really like to try an adept No, 1 or 2. An Elliott 10M just sold on Fleabay for over £400 and tidy Boxfords seem to fetch around the >£300 mark.

Nice Adept Stephen, I have a powered No2 sadly missing it's original table. I have a few shapers and whilst they can lack the sophistication of a milling machine I find there is something very theraputic about watching the ram quietly whisk backwards and forwards peeling off chunks of (hot) metal. And of course the very real bonus that using simple hand ground tooling you can create complex shapes like dovetails, you may have to be inventive when setting up but there isnt much you cant make on one.
That said I did come across a saying about shapers "you can make anything on a Shaper except money" |
