Thread: Warco A2F quill backlash - any pointers? |
24/03/2020 17:35:56 |
Hi, I have a 1992 A1S which has the same or very similar vertical head. I did not like the backlash or the garden gate type return spring. So I fitted two clock type coil spring that pull the quill upwards by the stop block. The springs rotate a shaft that pulls on some shim SS to pull the quill upwards. This removes the backlash and gives a lighter feel when drilling. I also have down feed for boring holes. I'll try to post some pics to give you more idea.

When I had a Colchester I had the same issue, I TIG welded the top of the splits up. They lasted 20 years till I sold the lathe. Cheers John |
Thread: Heidenhain scale repair |
31/08/2019 15:59:59 |
Nigel, Yes I have also found the Heidenhain service dept very helpful, but only on DRO display issues. Both times I've had scale problems I've told to use the agents. This was a good few years ago so things could be different now. Cheers John |

Be very careful who you deal with, I got well turned over when I sent one of my scales to an Heidenhain agent for repair. They had said on the phone that it would be repairable then when it came to fixing it they just wanted to sell me a new scale. Make sure you get a quote before you get too deep in. The good news is that EMS-i sell compatible scales with the round plug on. Not super cheap but about 25% the cost that the Heidenhain agents were offering. More important was the fact that EMS-i were really helpfull to deal with. In this day and age you may well be able to get a whole new setup for no more than the cost of repair of the scale. And if you only have a simple DRO at the moment you will get a lot more features. I don't seem to be able to paste a link but you can google EMS-i Cheers John

Thread: Dore Westbury Mk2 drive pulley repair |
18/08/2017 21:46:30 |
Canobi, From the data of my Mk2 DW the bore on the inner drive sleeve should be bored right through. So the bushes should not be up to a sholder. Is there just a spacer between the bushes? Your main spindle is standard (I think). However the tang on a standard MT drill chuck does need chopping off as there is no slot for a drift to eject the chuck. MES did recommend making an ejection nut the fit the Myford chuck thread. Thread: D1-4 Backplates |
13/05/2015 16:47:05 |
Yes I have a RDG one, as Nick said when supplied it did not refit true. This was due to the tapered bore being too small, had to scrape it out so that it fitted properly. I should have sent it back but it was easier to fix that problem than post it back. I know not to buy another from them. Cheers John |

Dave, All the info you need is in MEW No.110. That issue also has some good info on making toothed belt drives which might be useful. Cheers John |
26/11/2013 22:19:48 |
Dave, Graham, Some years ago there was an article in MEW on motorizing a tailstock hand wheel. It had all the ingredients you need to make it and could be adapted to suit your needs. I'll try and look it out tomorrow, unless anyone else can come up with the MEW number first. Cheers John |
Thread: Where do I |
14/11/2013 08:18:29 |
Graham, If you said where in the world you are people would be able to help more. If you are in the north east of England try M machine in Darlington. (01325 381300) They will post but buying locally saves on postage. Cheers John |
Thread: Colchester Student Mk2 or 1800 |
02/03/2013 16:04:44 |
Luke, I would approach with a bit of caution. A 1800 could be at least 27 years old and Colchester's wear out just as any other machine tool. If it's had a hard life it's fit for scrap, a good one would make a nice purchase though. It all depends on price, condition and what you want to make with it. Of the two models mentioned, buy the one in the best condition. If you need spares from 600 Group they are VERY expensive. If you can get the serial number 600 Group should be able to tell you how old it is, a good dealer may well have done this for you. Cheers John Edited By elanman on 02/03/2013 16:09:47 |

Paul, A quick search give this:- http://www.gwr-fasteners.co.uk/m8-metric-fine-pitch-10-grub-screws---high-tensile-149---5-pack-14458-p.asp I have not had any dealings with the firm. Or you could try Hawk Fasteners on Teesside who are very good. I don't think they offer a postal service. (0)1642 468581 Cheers John |
Thread: Countersinks angles |
19/02/2012 16:31:28 |
Hi, For work on carbon you need a carbide or better still a diamond cutter as HSS has a very short life. Another way I have found OK is to make a solid point on a piece of MS or alloy bar and super glue some wet and dry abrasive paper to it. It does not last long but it's cheap and the paper is easily replaced. When counter sinking I use a hand brace, that's fast enough. Cheers John Edited By elanman on 19/02/2012 17:02:12 |
Thread: What lathe to get? |
13/02/2012 14:38:38 |
Romeo, M300 yes. T300 no, it has no screw cutting. Also for Mod and DP worms you do need the 56T gearwheel supplied with a new M300. As others have said imp or metric is not important, get a DRO. Cheers John |
Thread: Moving a lathe |
27/11/2011 09:44:05 |
Matt, There are several ways, 1,Pay for it to be moved . Costs but could save your back!!! 2,Where are you in the world? maybe a gang from this site would help? 3,Read this, lots of useful info. http://www.anf.nildram.co.uk/workshop/m300/m300_moving.html They are a couple of firms near Leeds that move small machine tools etc, I'm using them in a couple of weeks some may have some recommendations. Thread: Running my Stuart S50 on air |

Duncan, You need a pressure regulator somewhere between the compressor and the S50. Some compressors have one, I would have thought 10 psi would have been ample. Cheers John |
Thread: Best way to improve fit of main spindle quill in casting (long) |
06/07/2011 22:07:59 |
Ian, A cylinder liner of 48 mm bore will give about 90cc so try looking for some of the 100cc Kart engine liners. They will be two strokes but normally come without the ports cut in. ![]() You can also buy cast iron tube for making bearings etc. Or you could try to get the existing quill plated or metal sprayed and ground back to size but this might cause a problem with the rack. Cheers John |
Thread: Dore Westbury adjustments |
13/06/2011 18:50:08 |
David,
I have a Westbury and had the same problem after I had made it. MES (the makers) supplied Loctite 601 for fixing the parts together. The head had to be separated from the cross tube by heating (remove bearings etc) till it could be parted. It's 601 you will not jack them apart!!! The problem is caused by the fact that the fit of the parts allows clearance for the glue and thus they can fit together out of square. Once you have them apart clean everything up ready for re-assembley. You also need to check that the T piece on top of the column is square, if not this needs removing as well.
But you first need to check that the base of the column is square with the bore as mine was not. True this up then fit to base. Then re-assemble head assembley and mount face plate on to spindle. Bolt face plate to table and adjust column height until cross tube can be fitted. Check it's square with table with DTI. Remove cross tube apply glue and re-fit, leave to set.
I should also say that the order in which you tighten the column to base clamping screws also has an effect on it's squareness with the table.
Hope this helps,
Cheers

Tony,
I have the original Blackgates drawings, if you want any part of the copied and emailed to you, PM me you email address. Also have a machine if you need any photos but mine is a standard machine.
Roger,
I built mine with the leadscrew fixed to the handwheel so it turns in the nut. The nut being fixed to the (moving) vertical slide.
Cheers
