Having just acquired a used Stent in need of some TLC I'm considering implementing most of the modifications described by Charles Woodward MEW 137.
 
Has anyone else carried out any of these mods ?
 
I'm relatively new to the hobby and am struggling to interpret the GA for the vertical raising element fig 3 pg 34 issue 137 - possibly also due to working from the digital archive. I had hoped that the author might have his own web page with further info / contact details but this appears not to be the case. A bigger image or a CAD file would really help me here.
 
Any help would be greatly appreciated

I'm building a Stent from scratch incorporating these mods plus some of my own and I've had a fair bit of head-scratching over this one.
 
Finally decided that the vertical leadscrew is fixed to the slide so that it can't rotate - it's the nut that rotates complete with the handwheel and nut housing.
 
As the handwheel / nut assembly is constrained around the column endplate it can't move in the vertical axis so the slide moves instead. In practice the leadscrew moves up / down within the nut housing.

A Stent is also one of those things that can be put into a narrowed artery to expand it and reduce the potential for a heart attack. The ambiguity of the term had me confused at first with this thread.   Try Googling 'Stent' and see what you get.

....Try making one and the potential for a heart attack becomes evident - you may NEED the sort you found in your search !
 
Now just try Googling 'Quorn' and you will find all sorts of useful information - mostly to do with cooking things up!
 
Where have you been anyway?

Good luck with yours - yes that was helpful. I also liked your pics of your VMC stops - I have been thinking about doing something similar for my SX3. Perhaps you'll be tempted to post some pics of your Stent as it progresses ?

I have the original Blackgates drawings, if you want any part of the copied and emailed to you, PM me you email address. Also have a machine if you need any photos but mine is a standard machine.
 
Roger,
I built mine with the leadscrew fixed to the handwheel so it turns in the nut. The nut being fixed to the (moving) vertical slide.

The title of the post had me intrigued as I almost needed a Stent fitting in the Main artery but fortunately it can wait a few years yet. But when I read the initial posts about obtaining a second hand one or building one I thought it quite amusing.
 
By the way when I was at Loughborough college many years ago, I was billeted at Quorn Hall - named after the village it was in just S. of Loughborough.  Prof Chaddock was a lecturer at Loughborough while I was there and he lived at Quorn, hence the name of the tool grinder.
 
In reply to your question. I've been away in France as I have a property there and have been on a maintenance mission (Posh description of grass cutting and weeding vast areas - or so it seems at the time). I'll be off again in July for most of the summer so I'll have to make the most of the next few weeks as I have no internet connection over there - too far away from any exchange and no satellite coverage. No TV either, it's heaven when you get used to it.

I've always wondered where the name "Quorn" came from - and now I know. I have the book and enjoy Prof Chaddock's descriptions but went for the Stent instead. Having done so I was most encouraged when speaking, at an exhibition, to the builder of a magnificant Quorn when he said that another time he would opt for the Stent! That said mine will only be of use when I finish it! It WILL happen - one day - honest! Progress to date about 60% I guess.
 
Now you really don't want to go all that way to France - I can let you carry out some satisifying maintenance tasks for me - how are you on (12ft +) Lleylandi hedges?
 
Is your workshop up and running now and, if so, what projects do you have planned?

Think that Charles Woodward probably designed the vertical leadscrew in order to avoid grinding grit getting into the leadscrew and nut, as the leadscrew and nut are effectively enclosed.

Sorry to go a bit OT but this seems a good place to ask a question I've been pondering for some time. Does anyone know if there is a supplier of Quorn cutter grinder castings these days? The web page of MES who used to supply them has not been live for some considerable time now although it is still there as a blank page. Does anyone know how many castings were in the original kit?
