Thread: Stuck Morse Taper in Warco Major 3024YZ |

Tapping simultaneously on the sides of the extended quill in the area of the taper with a pair of copper hammers will bring it loose. Work around the diameter until the taper comes loose. Get the two hammers to strike at once so the impact expands the taper from two sides at once. Steam fitters use this trick (with two steel hammers) to loosen up rusted pipework where tapered threads have seized solid. A pipe wrench with six foot of pipe on the handle and two blokes swinging on it will not shift rusted 2" pipe, but a 30 second belting with two hammers around the outside of the fitting and it comes loose by hand. Amazing to witness. Have used this myself and it certainly does work. Repetitive taps on tapered part works as well. As already stated no need to beat the living daylights out of it as that will cause damage. You will be surprised at what I have had to do in the plant hire business after some idiotic builder has their hands on the machines. Even when they report that a machine will not start and when I arrived on site the cause was they had lost the starting handle. |
Thread: Donations to keep forum free |
16/08/2022 09:23:37 |
Before I would even consider making a donation I would at least like to see the reduction of some of the tea room topics for example those that are asking question about everything which has nothing to do with Model Engineering. If people want to ask questions about computer problems there are forum for that use them The exception are when asking about things like CAD and the like as I know many do enjoy using CNC to make their models etc (which I don't but that is a personal thing) Also as a possible donater(if there is such a word) would I be allowed to link to whatever selling site I like and not be dictated by the present advertisers |
Thread: Refurbishing my bench |
08/08/2022 12:20:42 |
I have a bench the top is made of scaffold boards topped with 1/4" cheap plywood it has lasted for many years I have not managed to go through that to the boards underneath. Saying that it would now not harm if I replaced it, remember that this bench has been used mainly for woodworking. When I get around to it I have some toilet partition panels from a school(Yes I have cleaned and disinfected them) these are about 1/2" thick so should see me out and easy to keep clean |

Mike as I don't own a dog now (ours passed away some time ago and sadly missed) I am not up on the current laws regarding carrying pets in the car or come to think of it kids |
02/08/2022 11:10:10 |
My step son visited the other day with his dog in the car and he had to have a restraint for him(the dog that is) in the form of a lead that clips into a seat belt fixture, when we asked he did state that it is now law Edited By Derek Lane on 02/08/2022 11:10:56 |
Thread: The best advice I was ever given/gleaned - Keep it on the Stock! |
01/08/2022 08:30:41 |
Like many one of the older pieces of advice is measure twice and cut once. With me I measure once mark the piece then measure three or more times and sometimes have still got it wrong especially when I have used the depth mic and read the scale the wrong way |
Thread: Bench lathe |

Glad to hear Graham. I was making a rocking horse when I had a stroke it was the wanting to finish it that got me back in the saddle making things in wood and then progress to metal bashing. I have gone for digital read outs on everything to make things easier to read and it works for me |
Thread: 4140 - general discussion |

From what I gather 708M40 is the equivalent to 4140 and looking up 708M40 as you have said is equivalent to EN19 |
Thread: Is there a club in the southwest that’s not a Labour camp |
28/07/2022 14:36:13 |
Not yet joined a club but hope to when I can get them to answer the contact on their website(Why bother having one is my thought, I am sure there is more than one member who has access to it). Other clubs I have belonged to as with many find that there is always a small group that do everything and the rest leave it to them. I use to help on many occasions but it got to the stage that they expected it all of the time so stopped doing it. Another I was on the committee and did a fair stint it got to the stage that I just said no more and forced them to find someone else |

It is a shame that they do not use the internet more for their online business. If they did I would be tempted to use them as it is could not do with all the faffing about. And what I hear waiting for them to reply to e mails etc |

How about banning turning vegetables into so called meat alternatives. In my mind you are either a meat eater or not. Cannot see the sense in using energy to convert a vegetable into anything else when it is perfectly edible as is. I have to agree to that why make it taste like meat if those that eat it want something to taste like meat then eat meat. Why call it meatless chicken as it is not chicken if it has no meat in it to me it is false advertising. Most of them just seemed confused. Can't agree with that! Many vegetables aren't edible unless converted by energy into something our digestive systems can handle. Like Bread! Other vegetables be eaten raw, but they're pretty nasty - try eating an uncooked potato. Cooking is an important way of increasing the amount of food we can eat, as are other forms of processing. Many people enjoy the taste and texture of meat but balk at the pain, suffering and waste it causes. So I don't have a problem anyone preferring with meat alternatives. The way things are going it's only a matter of time before we all have to eat insect protein: no problem as long as I can't tell the difference between locust and beef-steak! I wonder how many happy meat eaters would still be keen after being taken around a battery farm, slaughter-house, and a meat processing facility? Not for the squeamish, much worse than wringing a rabbit's neck before skinning and gutting it for the pot. But we all have to eat. Dave No one said you should not turn veg into something edible it was more about saying for example "that it is meatless chicken" where as chicken is not meatless. I also find it strange that you state that it "Many people enjoy the taste and texture of meat but balk at the pain" so if it balk that much why make it taste like it to remind you what it tastes like. Call it what you like but do not refer to it as meat of any kind. Just call it a vegetable patty or something similar. PS I will still sit and enjoy my medium rare steak and I am sure you will enjoy you vegieburger Edited By Derek Lane on 20/07/2022 11:08:54 |

Thread: Diy Magnetic table with permanent magnets |

The magnets should not be 'shorted' by any steel. The thickness of the brass blocks should be about the same as that of the magnets. The sliding steel pieces must be in good contact with the steel bars in the face of the table and the magnets. Do you mean the same as in this video |

Looking closely at the drawing, it seems the front hole is bushed, but the bush is housed in a 1/16" deep counterbore in the face of the rod, presumably so it clears the slide bars on the cylinder? In this case the bush would need to be 1/16" shorter than the other two as well. You are right though that the text on the drawing implies only 2 bushes per rod. If you examine the drawings the front one does not show the dotted line for a bush like the centre and rear one. Yes it is counterbored for a washer and countersunk screw so as to allow clearence for the connecting rod |

I've just had a quick read of the construction book - page 28 in the paperback edition - last 2 paras cover it. After checking/adjusting the initial drilled hole positions on leading and trailing holes in the rods Martin describes drilling out to letter N, reaming 5/16" and fitting bushes 'as drawings'. The drawing doesn't clearly show a bush on the leading end but the text does read as though they are intended to be bushed. The idea of running steel on steel makes me shudder! And that is the problem either the book is incorrect or the plans yet they were done by the same person. And as the book stated "and fitting bushes 'as drawings" and as the drawing don't show a bush in that hole in either the book or plans. As it is I have decided to put them in regardless after reading all of the comments here and on another forum Edited By Derek Lane on 16/07/2022 12:08:19 |
