Thread: Can you help identify this lathe compound slide?
15/10/2022 19:35:09

Proper use of a retracting top slide makes screw cutting a little less likely to go pear shaped.

When the Herald of Free Enterprise capsized I write to my mp suggesting that it would be simple to fit an interlock so that the ship could not go forward if the bow doors were open, ditto reverse. I received a verbose but badly argued response from whichever minister was responsible stating that the captain had to be in full command of the ship at all times. Relying on someone checking that the door is shut on a process repeated many times a day is bound to go wrong. Humans make mistakes more frequently than we like to admit.

Yes an 'accident' waiting to happen? I believe they use cameras and other methods to check the door closing now?

Tony

A camera doesn't check that the door is closed, it still requires a human to look at it.

I'm presuming the 'other methods' I mentioned are part of a multi layered checking process now.

Thread: Heads-up for Clarkson screwed-shank users
13/10/2022 12:19:00

This post reminded me of long forgotten Clarkson collet adaptors I made back in the 70's when threaded cutters were king. Basically just old cutter shanks cut off & slotted to take a screw driver, we would screw them into the correct collet and now plain shanked tooling could be held securely.img_1290.jpg

£13.99 for 1 mtr of 5/8" silver steel, I would grab that with both hands. A supplier I have used wants £20 for 12 inches and £70 for 39 inches....surprise

.

That’s because they are supplying proper Imperial stuff, Ron

Rare as Rocking-Horse Manure !!devil

The cheap stuff seems to tick all the right boxes.

Thread: New Milling Machine
12/10/2022 13:45:53

I concur with JasonB, I also note the CNC4You MM32L is out of stock, if you want a CNC mill & have the funds I would go for it now but it will be a very steep learning curve IF you are new to machining.

To mind 'runout' means rotational eccentricity but I'm thinking that is not what you mean, you might need to elaborate with more details. Just for fun I Googled 'best practice methods for lathe headstock alignment', plenty of reading to wade through. Maybe start with LPR Toolmakers.

Time to roll-out the “quote” that is often attributed to john Ruskin:

"There is hardly anything in the world that someone cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and the people who consider price alone are that person's lawful prey."

Thread: Ideas on how to form the joggle plate for a small tool makers clamp

One of the many solutions is a counterbore for the knurled screw and use a straight plate.

Thread: Advice on DRO mounting on Myford VMC
27/09/2022 11:43:01

Definitely 5 um is 'good enough' on a milling M/C or dare I say any M/C. Can't comment on M-DRO specifically as I have a Warco DRO on my Myford VME mill.

Us oldies are being "robbed blind" - over £43/wk (£185.15 - £141.85) just for having wrong DOB. I thought that ageism was against the law?? And a further £159 for a TV licence. Half of Europe doesn't have TV licences. One of the worst old age pensions in Europe. Lieing bastards promised the first WW conscripts a return to a land of milk n honey. Reality: mass unemployment and no dole.

I would be interested to see what happens if you stop paying your TV licence. Both my daughters haven't got licences as they don't watch live TV but all streaming services, not sure if that is legal?

Serious question to the OP! Does your grinder actually need refurbishing, have you tried using it or is this something you just want to do?

I can't recall ever using coolant on a band saw, just have a go with the blade you have got at the moment.

Non comprendez. What exactly are you trying to pull? I think you are trying hard to make things difficult for replies and actually doing the job.

The sensible way would be to cut a centre and support with a tailstock centre?

Edited By not done it yet on 23/09/2022 11:19:07

Go with NDIY, 'cut a centre and support with a tailstock centre' or hold the thread in a bush or collet and cut plain diameter.

I keep promising myself to buy a Noga tool where do you think is the best place to buy one from as a number of places sell them. E Bay has some but how do you know that they are genuine tools as some say they are Noga yet do not have the name on the handle. I do not use Amazon or Arceuro 1 I would not trust with a barge pole and the other does not take Paypal

Are you seriously saying you only use PayPal?

Thread: Myford or any other adjustable rear parting tool
17/09/2022 11:02:22
Posted by John Rutzen on 17/09/2022 09:20:11:

I have a rear parting toolpost I made for my Harrison M250 but I find that it isn't dig-ins that are the problem. What happens is that a bit of swarf welds itself in the cut , jamming everything up. So I am very cautious about parting off, I keep my hand on the clutch lever all the time so I can stop it quickly if it goes wrong.

What cutting oil or coolant do you use?
